א (Aleph)
Position on the Tree of Life
Aleph is the Path of the Fool. It connects Kether (Crown) to Chokmah (Wisdom) on the Tree of Life (Path 11). This path is a direct transmission of pure, unformed potential from the first sefirah to the second. It is the channel of the Air element, the breath of god that brings life and creation into existence.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
The Air element is not a planet in the traditional sense, but Aleph corresponds to the intellectual, communicative, and expansive nature of Air. This is the sphere of the mind and the lightest of the physical elements. In the zodiac, Aleph is associated with the sign of Aquarius, ruled by Saturn (Airy Saturn), but this is a secondary, more recent attribution. The elemental Air is primary.
Historical Context
The earliest extant sources for attributing Hebrew letters to the Tree of Life are the Sepher Yetzirah (Book of Formation). This text arranges the 22 letters into three categories: Three Mothers (אמש), Seven Doubles, and Twelve Simples. Aleph is the first Mother letter, ruling the element of Air. It is described as the 'breath of the living God' and the foundation of all other breath. The Sepher Yetzirah assigns Aleph to the air of the macrocosm, the temperate climate of the year, and the chest in the microcosm.
The medieval Kabbalistic text The Book of Bahir (The Illumination) elaborates on Aleph as the first letter of the Tetragrammaton (the I of YHVH) and a symbol of the unity of the Father. The Zohar (Book of Splendor) further develops this, calling Aleph the 'primordial point' in the form of a Yod, which then expands into the Vav and the final Yod, showing the three-fold division.
In the Western Esoteric Tradition, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn synthesized these Kabbalistic ideas with Tarot. Aleph became the letter of the card The Fool (0), a figure of pure spirit stepping into the abyss. Aleister Crowley, in The Book of Thoth, emphasizes Aleph as the letter of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, and the inspiration of the universe. He calls it the 'Air we breathe' and equates it with the Greek letter Alpha and the Latin A. The three-fold division of the glyph is central to his interpretation, representing the synthesis of Father, Mother, and Child in a single letter.
In Liber 777, the correspondence for Aleph (Path 11) under the Hebrew Letters row includes:
- Number: 1, but placed on Path 11
- Name: Aleph (Ox, Ox-goad)
- Letter value: 1
- Element: Air
- Tarot card: The Fool
- Astrological sign: Aquarius (in later developments)
- God name: YHVH (in the sense of the Airy Tetragrammaton)
- Spirit vision: The Angel of the Face of God
- Mystical number: 111 (The number of the word "אחד" meaning "one")
- Path attribute: The First Path, the Intellect of Flash
In the table, Aleph is the first of the 22 paths, a straightforward correspondence to the Air element and the Fool archetype.
