ג
Gimel, the third letter of the Hebrew alphabet, spelled גִּימֶל, derives its name from the word for camel (גָּמָל). In form it is a bent shape resembling a neck arching forward, and its numeric value is 3, a number of synthesis, creativity, and progression. The letter’s sound is a voiced velar plosive (/g/), and in Kabbalistic tradition it is the symbol of a wealthy man running after the poor (the Dalet, the fourth letter), an act of bestowing kindness.
Position on the Tree of Life
Gimel corresponds to the 13th path of the Tree of Life, connecting Kether (the Crown) to Tiphareth (Beauty). This is a path that crosses the Abyss, bridging the supernal realm of pure undifferentiated consciousness with the heart of the microcosm. The 13th path is traditionally ascribed to the “High Priestess” card of the Tarot, reflecting the lunar, receptive, and mysterious nature of this letter. Movement along this path is neither straight nor static; it is the gallop of the camel, carrying the seeker across the desert of the Abyss.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
In the system of Liber 777, Gimel is assigned to the sphere of the Moon (Yesod). This lunar correspondence is rooted in the letter’s own symbolism of travel, flow, and nightly journey. The Moon’s phases mirror the camel’s steady gait—slow, cyclical, and reflective. The path of Gimel is thus a nocturnal, water-bearing current that nourishes the sephiroth below. The camel, like the Moon, is a beast of burden that endures the harshest conditions, carrying water across the arid wilds.
Historical Context
The letter Gimel has a rich history in mystical Judaism. Its shape is said to represent a bridge, a channel for divine influx. In the Sefer Yetzirah, it is one of the twelve simple letters that correspond to the zodiacal months, but in the later Kabbalistic systems (especially those of the Zohar and of Isaac Luria), it is grouped with the three mother letters (aleph, mem, shin) as a letter of the Air element. As the third letter, it is linked to the nervous system and the sense of touch, reflecting its role as a conduit. In the 19th-century occult revival, MacGregor Mathers and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn assigned it to the 13th path and the Moon, codifying its use in ceremonial magick. The correspondence in Liber 777 builds on this, placing Gimel as the central Hebrew letter for the 13th scale step.
In the table of Liber 777, the cell for the 13th path, under the column for Hebrew letters, is simply "ג". This concise entry anchors the entire complex of correspondences—lunar, camel, High Priestess, and the bridging path—to a single, essential character. The letter stands alone, yet it carries the weight of all those associations within the system.
