ח

The Hebrew letter Cheth (ח) is the eighth letter of the alphabet, its name meaning 'fence' or 'enclosure.' Its form is composed of two previous letters, Vav (ו) and Zayin (ז), joined by a thin bridge, suggesting the union of opposing forces within a bounded space. This letter embodies the concept of a sacred, protected precinct—a womb, a sanctuary, or a hidden chamber.

Position on the Tree of Life

Cheth corresponds to Path 18, which connects the Sephirah Binah (Understanding) to Geburah (Severity) on the Tree of Life. This path is the 'Intelligence of the House of Influence,' a channel through which the formless, receptive power of Binah is shaped and directed by the dynamic, limiting force of Geburah. It is the path of the Chariot, the vehicle that carries the will through the trials of manifestation.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Cheth is assigned to the zodiacal sign Cancer, the Crab. This correspondence is deeply fitting: Cancer is the cardinal water sign, the gate of incarnation, and the house of the Moon. Like the crab's shell, Cheth represents a protective, enclosing vessel—the womb, the home, the ancestral memory. The sign's ruler, the Moon, further emphasizes the themes of reflection, hidden depths, and cyclical nourishment. In the Sepher Yetzirah, Cheth is one of the 'single' letters, governing the sense of sight, the faculty of speech, and the month of Tammuz.

Historical context

In the Sefer Yetzirah, Cheth is described as one of the eight 'single' letters (those with a single sound, as opposed to the 'mothers' and 'doubles'), and is said to be 'the foundation of the world' in the context of the zodiac. Its form is traditionally interpreted as a gateway or a fence, a symbol of the boundary between the inner and outer worlds. In the Zohar, Cheth is associated with the supernal Chariot (Merkabah) and the mystery of the divine presence dwelling within the enclosed space of the Holy of Holies. The letter's numerical value of 8 signifies the octave, the cycle of renewal, and the covenant of circumcision. In later Kabbalistic meditation, Cheth is the letter of the heart (Lev, לב), whose own letters (Lamed and Beth) sum to 32, the number of the paths of wisdom. The heart is the enclosed sanctuary where the divine and human meet.

In the table of Liber 777, Cheth (ח) appears at step 18 in the column of Hebrew Letters. Its position as the letter of Cancer, the Chariot, and the protective enclosure underscores its role as the vessel that contains and directs the creative fire of the divine will.
