ש

ש (Shin) is the twenty-first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, with a numeric value of 300. Its name means “tooth” or “fang,” reflecting its dental articulation and its symbolic role as a consuming, transformative force. In mystical tradition, Shin is the letter of the threefold flame of spirit, often depicted with three upward strokes, representing the three pillars of the Tree of Life or the three primordial elements.

Position on the Tree of Life

Shin corresponds to the 31st Path on the Tree of Life, connecting the sephiroth of Hod (Splendor) and Netzach (Victory). This path is known as the “Perpetual Intelligence,” governing the continuous flow of spiritual energy. The letter is also associated with the 32nd Path (Tau) as the final letter of the alphabet, but in its specific placement on Path 31, it sits at the boundary between the lower and upper realms.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Shin is traditionally linked to the element of Fire and, in later Kabbalistic systems, to the planet Mars. This dual association reflects its destructive and purifying nature – fire as both devourer and renewer. In astrological correspondences, Shin’s three flames parallel the three faces of Mars: the warrior, the protector, and the alchemical catalyst.

Historical context

Shin holds a pivotal role in Jewish mysticism as the third letter of the divine name YHVH (י-ה-ו-ה) when written in full, with Shin inserted into the Tetragrammaton to form the name Yehovashah or Yeshua. In the Sefer Yetzirah, Shin is one of the “mother letters” (alongside Aleph and Mem), governing the element of fire. The letter’s three branches also symbolize the three patriarchs – Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – and the three divisions of the Jewish people. In medieval Kabbalah, the Zohar describes Shin as the “holy letter” that seals the heart with divine love, and its presence in the tefillin’s leather box represents the soul’s ascent. Crowley, in his writings on Liber 777, emphasizes Shin as the letter of Spirit, invoking the energies of transformation and the Holy Guardian Angel.

Correspondence in Liber 777

In the Liber 777 table, Shin appears as the Hebrew Letter on the 31st scale step (Path 31). Its row (CLXXV.) presents it alongside the other Hebrew letters, with no additional tags or attributes beyond its own symbolic weight. The entry reflects its role as a fixed point in the alphabet, serving as the culmination of the letter sequence from Aleph to Tau.
