Samekh is the fifteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, with a numerical value of 60. Its name means “support” or “prop,” derived from the Semitic root smk—to lean upon, to uphold. The letter's form is a closed circle, sometimes depicted as a vertical stroke with a rounded back, signifying completeness and the sustaining structure of the cosmos.
Position on the Tree of Life
Samekh occupies Path 25, the twenty-fifth path on the Tree of Life, which connects Chesed (Mercy) to Netzach (Victory). This path is one of the three “horizontal” paths on the Tree, representing the uninterrupted circulation of energy between the pillars of form and force. In the 777 schema, this path is the axis of aspiration—the ladder that supports the ascent from the sphere of emotions (Netzach) toward the sphere of expansive mercy (Chesed). The letter’s very shape—a continuous loop—mirrors this unbroken flow.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Samekh corresponds to Sagittarius, the archer. As a zodiacal letter, it carries the centaur’s dual nature: half-beast, half-human, aiming heavenward. Sagittarius is the mutable fire sign, ruled by Jupiter, and its symbol is the arrow in flight. In the context of Path 25, the arrow represents directed will, the seeker’s aim toward the divine. The archer’s bow is the support (Samekh) that launches the arrow; without that grounded tension, there is no release.
Historical context
Samekh appears in the Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation) as one of the twelve “simple letters” that correspond to the twelve zodiacal months and the twelve organs of the body. There, Samekh is assigned to the month of Kislev (approximately November–December) and to the “intestine” (the digestive tract), which upholds the body’s nourishment. In the Kabbalistic tradition of the Bahir, Samekh is associated with the divine attribute of Chesed (Mercy), reinforcing its role as a sustaining force.
In the Hebrew script itself, Samekh is one of the five letters that have a special final form in Torah scrolls (though its final form is identical to the medial form—a closed circle). The letter is also central to the word Sekhel (intellect), linking the letter to the concept of the “supporting” intellect that upholds the structure of reality. Later medieval kabbalists, such as the Zohar, connect Samekh to the divine name El associated with Chesed, emphasizing its role as the pillar that prevents the collapse of the sefirotic edifice.
In the 777 table, Samekh is entered at step 25 as the Hebrew letter corresponding to the path that bridges the upper and lower sections of the Tree. Its appearance here is the glyph for the portal itself—the ‘support’ that every traveler requires when moving from the heart’s desires to the ordered mercy of the divine.
