ט
The ninth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, ט (Tet) is a consonant whose numeric value (gematria) is 9. Its name means 'serpent,' 'basket,' or 'coil,' and its written form symbolically depicts a coiled snake or a womb. This dual imagery—of both the dangerous, winding serpent and the protective, containing basket—captures Tet's essential nature: the hidden, latent power of the feminine principle, the primordial darkness that contains the seed of all life, and the subtle, concealed forces of creation that must be carefully handled.
Position on the Tree of Life
Tet corresponds to Path 19, which on the Tree of Life connects the Sephirah Chesed (Mercy, 4) to Geburah (Severity, 5). This is the nineteenth path, a bridge between the expansive, loving force of Chesed and the restrictive, judgmental force of Geburah. Its position suggests a harmonizing or balancing energy—a hidden goodness or subtle strength that mediates between opposing cosmic principles. The path itself is often associated with the astrological sign of Leo, the first of the fire signs, linking the letter's serpentine imagery with the royal, solar power of the lion.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
In the system of the Sepher Yetzirah and subsequent Qabalistic tradition, Tet is the letter of Leo (♌). Leo is a fixed, fiery sign ruled by the Sun. This correspondence reinforces Tet's nature: Leo represents the heart, the center of vitality, royalty, pride, and the blazing, creative fire of the individual will. However, Tet's serpentine symbolism tempers this fiery, outgoing energy with the hiddenness of the coiled snake—the power is not yet fully manifest, blazing in potential within the darkness of the womb or the cave. This is the solar power in potentia, the inner spiritual sun that must be awakened.
Historical Context
The letter Tet holds deep and layered meanings across Jewish mystical and practical traditions.
- The Serpent of the Garden: The most potent association of Tet is with the primordial serpent (Nachash) of the Garden of Eden. In the Zohar, the serpent is seen as the embodiment of the Yeitzer HaRa (the Evil Inclination). Yet, the word for 'good' that first appears in the Torah regarding the Creation ("And God saw the light, that it was good") is spelled with a Tet in the phrase Tov (טוב). This establishes a profound paradox: the letter Tet contains both the serpent of temptation and the essential 'goodness' of creation. The Zohar teaches that this hidden goodness (tov) is the potential for redemption and spiritual transformation that lies coiled within the darkness of the material world.
- The Coiled Path: In the Sepher Yetzirah (Book of Formation), Tet is one of the twelve 'simple' letters (those that do not have a dual pronunciation), corresponding to the twelve months of the year, the twelve zodiacal signs, and the twelve organs of the body. Its function is described as 'coiled' or 'winding,' reflecting both the shape of the letter and the path it represents—a twisting, hidden journey rather than a straight line.
- The Primordial Woman: The name Tet is also linked to the word Tiyut (clay or mud) and the creative act of forming humanity from the earth. Symbolically, the serpentine shape of the letter is often compared to the shape of the fetus in the womb, specifically the primordial woman, Lilith, or the Shekhinah (the divine feminine presence) in her concealed, un-manifested state. It represents the womb of creation, the hidden sanctuary from which life emerges.
- Numerological Value (9): The number 9 is the number of completion and gestation. It is the number of the months of human pregnancy, reinforcing the womb/serpent/coiled symbolism. It also represents the sphere of Yesod (the Foundation) on the Tree of Life, the place of the lunar, creative, and subconscious energies that form the bridge to the material world. In the 777 system, the number 9 also corresponds to the planet Luna (the Moon) in other contexts, further strengthening the association with hidden, reflective, and cyclical feminine power.
- The Good and the Evil Inclination: The Talmud (Kiddushin 30b) states that the Evil Inclination (Yeitzer HaRa) is embodied in the letter Tet. Yet, the word Tov (good) begins with Tet. This is not a contradiction but a synthesis. The path of Tet is the alchemical process of transforming the raw, serpentine energy of the material world (the ra) into the hidden good (tov). It is the crucible of spiritual refinement, where the coiled potential is either realized as creative power or released as destructive force.
In the 777 table at this step (Path 19), ט (Tet) appears in the column for Hebrew Letters, representing the letter itself. This entry identifies the specific glyph used on this path of the Tree of Life, setting it apart from the other 21 letters. Its placement here associates it directly with the energies of Chesed, Geburah, and the zodiacal sign of Leo, marking it as a key to understanding the letter's unique blend of hidden fire, serpentine wisdom, and the transformative power of the hidden good.
