ע

The letter ע (Ayin) is the sixteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, its name meaning “eye.” Its form—a circle with a descending stroke—suggests an organ of sight, but also a well or spring (the root עין can mean both “eye” and “fountain”). In Hebrew numerology (gematria), Ayin has the value 70, a number associated with the seventy nations, the seventy faces of the Torah, and the seventy elders of Israel. The letter embodies the faculty of perception, both physical and spiritual, and the capacity to see beyond surfaces.

Position on the Tree of Life

Ayin is assigned to Path 26, the twenty‑sixth connecting path on the Tree of Life. This path runs between Tiphareth (Beauty, the sixth sephirah) and Netzach (Victory, the seventh sephirah). It is the path of the “eye” that mediates between the harmonizing center of the microcosm and the driving forces of emotion and instinct. The journey on Path 26 requires clear vision—seeing through illusion to the true will—and is often associated with the Tarot trump The Fool, who steps forward with eyes open or closed, trusting in a deeper sight.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the system of Liber 777, Ayin corresponds to the zodiac sign Capricorn (the Sea‑Goat) and its ruling planet Saturn. Capricorn’s symbolism of ascent, discipline, and the goat’s unblinking stare into the abyss aligns with the letter’s nature as an “eye” that endures darkness to reach the heights. Saturn, the slowest planet, brings the weight of time, limitation, and the crystallization of form—qualities that the eye must penetrate to perceive the eternal within the temporal.

Historical context

Ayin appears in the earliest Hebrew inscriptions and in the proto‑Sinaitic script as a pictograph of an eye. In the Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), the twenty‑two letters are divided into three groups: three mothers, seven doubles, and twelve simples. Ayin is one of the twelve simple letters, associated with the sense of sight and the zodiac sign Capricorn. The Zohar expounds on Ayin as the “eye of the well,” a gate through which divine light flows into the lower worlds. In later Kabbalistic meditation, the letter is visualized as a pupil surrounded by white and black—the interplay of mercy and judgment. The 26th path is also linked to the “eye of the needle” through which the rich man (the ego) must pass, a motif echoed in Christian and Hermetic texts.

In Liber 777

In the table of Hebrew Letters (row CLXXV.), the letter ע (Ayin) appears at scale step 26, corresponding to Path 26. Its placement here anchors the entire column of Hebrew letters, providing the glyph that Kabbalists use to trace the connection between Tiphareth and Netzach. The letter’s numerical value 70 and its astrological rulership (Capricorn‑Saturn) are the primary correspondences that the practitioner consults when working with this path.
