Ox

The Ox (Hebrew: Aleph, א) is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, numeral value 1. The word ‘aleph’ literally means ‘ox’ or ‘ox-head,’ derived from the Proto-Canaanite pictograph of an ox’s head, which also gave rise to the Greek Alpha and the Latin A. In the Western esoteric tradition, the Ox represents the primal, silent, creative breath — the unmanifested power that precedes all articulate sound.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the Ox corresponds to Path 11, the first path of the Middle Pillar, linking Kether (the Crown, 1) to Chokmah (Wisdom, 2). This is the path of the Primordial Air (the element of the letter Aleph), the “subtle air” or “spirit” that flows between the first two sephiroth. As Path 11, the Ox serves as the channel for the initial impulse of creation, the “Word” that as yet remains unspoken — the pure potential of divine will.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Under the Hermetic system, the Ox corresponds to the element of Air, not to a specific planet. It is associated with the airy sign of the zodiac’s first house — the ram (Aries) in some later developments, but classically purely elemental. Its planetary affinity is with the “natural” order of the atmosphere: constant, invisible, vital, and present in every breath and sound.

Historical Context

The Aleph originates in the Proto-Sinaitic script as a stylized ox head (𐅄), a symbol of strength, leadership, and sacrifice. In the Hebrew Bible, the ox is a domesticated beast of burden and a sacrificial animal (e.g., Leviticus 4). In the Sefer Yetzirah, Aleph is named the “King” of the element Air and the “breath” by which the other letters are formed. Qabalistically, the Ox is the silent beginning of the alphabet, holding within it the seeds of all other letters. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Ox is attributed to the zodiacal sign Aquarius in some tables, but the 777 system follows the earlier tradition: the Ox is Air, the “wind” of the first path, also linked to the Tarot trump The Fool (number 0) — which depicts a man about to step off a cliff, the ox-like creative folly of pure spirit. The association with the ox plowing the field suggests the toil of the Great Work: the ox draws the furrow into which the seed (will) is sown.

In the 777 table at Step 11 (Path 11), the named subject “Ox” appears as the English equivalent of the Hebrew letter Aleph in Column II. It stands as the gateway to the entire correspondences system: the first letter, the first path, the first breath of manifestation, and the root of all that follows.
