Understanding

Understanding is the third Sephirah on the Tree of Life, corresponding to Binah. It represents the receptive, formative principle of divine wisdom, the great sea of formless potential that gives shape to all things. Its name derives from the Hebrew root בין (B-Y-N), meaning 'to discern' or 'to distinguish.'

Position on the Tree of Life

Understanding occupies the left pillar of Severity, directly below Chokmah (Wisdom) and above Chesed (Mercy). It is the third sphere, the first fully receptive Sephirah, receiving the raw creative force of Chokmah and giving it structure. In the path of descent, Understanding is the point where the infinite light of Keter becomes bounded and defined, the womb of all forms.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Understanding is assigned to the sphere of Saturn, the slowest and most distant of the classical planets. Saturn represents limitation, time, and the crystallization of form—qualities that mirror Understanding's role as the great restrictor and definer. In the zodiac, it corresponds to Capricorn and Aquarius, signs of structure and collective vision.

Historical context

In the Sefer Yetzirah, the third Sephirah is called "the Intelligent Sanctifying One" (Binah), the foundation of the primordial wisdom. The Zohar describes Binah as the "supernal mother" who gives birth to the seven lower Sephiroth, the world of creation. In the Bahir, it is the "treasure-house of souls" and the source of the divine name YHVH Elohim. Medieval Kabbalists, particularly the Cordoveran school, emphasized Binah as the point where the infinite Ein Sof becomes comprehensible through limitation. In the Hermetic Qabalah of the Golden Dawn, Understanding is the great sea of the Ain Soph, the passive principle that receives the active force of Chokmah. It is the sphere of the letter Heh in the Tetragrammaton, the final letter of the divine name that completes the cycle of emanation.

In Liber 777

In the table of Liber 777, Understanding appears at step 3 (Binah) in the column for English of Col. II. It is the third of the ten Sephiroth, placed between the crown of Keter and the wisdom of Chokmah, and before the mercy of Chesed. Its correspondences include the number 3, the color black, the planet Saturn, and the divine name YHVH Elohim. As the third Sephirah, Understanding is the gate through which the formless becomes formed, the principle of all limitation and definition.
