Foundation
Foundation is the English rendering of the Hebrew Sephirah Yesod (יסוד), meaning "base" or "foundation." In the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, it is the ninth sphere, the last of the seven lower Sephiroth, and serves as the great receiver and transmitter of all the energies flowing down from the supernal and moral triads. It is the astral body, the vehicle of the soul, and the bridge between the ideal and the material.
Position on the Tree of Life
Foundation occupies the central position on the Pillar of Equilibrium, directly below Tiphereth (Beauty) and above Malkuth (Kingdom). It is the sphere of the Moon, the realm of illusion, reflection, and the subconscious. In the path of the lightning flash, it is the ninth step, gathering the influences of all the higher Sephiroth and focusing them into a single point of manifestation.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Yesod is governed by the Moon (Levanah), the celestial body of cycles, tides, and hidden knowledge. Its astrological nature is receptive, formative, and reflective. The Moon here is not the physical satellite alone but the archetype of the feminine, the night, and the gateway to dreams. In Liber 777, the number 9 is assigned to Yesod, and its planetary intelligence is the spirit of the Moon, Shad Barshemoth ha-Shartathan.
Historical context
The concept of Yesod as "Foundation" emerges from the earliest Kabbalistic texts, such as the Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar. In the Zohar, Yesod is described as the righteous one (Tzaddik), the phallus, and the channel through which all divine blessing flows into the world. It is the foundation of the soul, the seat of the yetzer ha-tov (good inclination), and the point where the upper waters meet the lower. Medieval Kabbalists like Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria expanded on this, seeing Yesod as the repository of all the Sephirotic lights, which it then transmits to Malkuth. In the Hermetic Qabalah of the Golden Dawn, Yesod became the sphere of the astral plane, the realm of the moon, magic, and the subconscious. It is the foundation of the physical world, the mold into which all form is cast.
Closing
In the table of Liber 777, at the step of 9 (Yesod), the named subject "Foundation" appears as the English of Column II, directly corresponding to the Sephirah Yesod. It is the ninth sphere, the lunar receptacle, and the astral foundation upon which the Kingdom of Malkuth is built.
