Water
Water (Hebrew: מים, Mayim) is the second of the four classical elements, the universal solvent, and the symbol of the passive, receptive, and formative principle in creation. Its name in Hebrew, Mayim, is a dual noun, hinting at its nature as both a single substance and a duality of potential and actual states—the still, deep waters of potentiality and the flowing, living waters of manifestation. In the Kabbalistic schema of the Sepher Yetzirah, Water is the first of the three elemental letters (the Mother Letters: Aleph, Mem, Shin), corresponding to the letter Mem (מ), whose form is said to resemble the waves of the sea.
Position on the Tree of Life
Water is the elemental attribution of Path 23, which connects Hod (Splendour, the sphere of intellect and communication) to Malkuth (the Kingdom, the material world). This path is the 23rd letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Mem. As the path of the Great Sea, it represents the flow of subconscious imagery and the formative power of the astral light that crystallizes into the solid world. It is the bridge between the analytical mind (Hod) and the physical body (Malkuth), the realm of dreams, memory, and the fluidic medium of all magical change.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the system of Liber 777, Water is not directly assigned a planet but is the elemental substance of the letter Mem, which is attributed to the zodiacal sign Scorpio (עקרב, Akrab). Scorpio, the Scorpion, is a Water sign of fixed quality, ruling the depths of the subconscious, the processes of death and regeneration, and the hidden mysteries of sex and magic. This attribution links Water to the transformative, secretive, and penetrating aspects of the element, rather than its more placid or nurturing expressions.
Historical context
The concept of Water as a primordial element is universal. In the Babylonian Enuma Elish, the universe begins with the mingling of fresh water (Apsu) and salt water (Tiamat). In the Greek tradition, Thales of Miletus (c. 624–546 BCE) declared water to be the archē—the fundamental substance from which all things arise. The Hermetic axiom "As above, so below" is often visualized through the image of water reflecting the heavens. In alchemy, Water (often symbolized by a downward-pointing triangle) is the solvent, the aqua permanens that dissolves the base metal to prepare it for the Philosopher's Stone. The Zohar describes the primordial waters as the "tears" of the Ein Sof, the first differentiation of the infinite light into a vessel of reception, which is the Sephirah Binah (Understanding), the Great Sea. This connection is explicit in the 777 table, where Water appears as the elemental correspondence of Binah on the 3rd path, reinforcing its role as the passive, receptive, and formative womb of creation.
Closing
In the table of Liber 777, at the step of Path 23 (the letter Mem), Water appears as the English of Column II, the elemental name for the path of the Great Sea. It is the fluidic, receptive, and transformative substance that flows between the spheres of Splendour and the Kingdom, the very medium of the astral light that gives form to all things.
