AGLA · ALHIM

AGLA · ALHIM is a composite divine name and magical formula joining the potent notariqon AGLA (Ateh Gibor Le-Olam Adonai, “Thou art mighty forever, O Lord”) with the plural Elohim, the generic Hebrew word for “Gods” or “powers.” The junction enforces the sense of stern judgment: AGLA already bespeaks the Eternal Ruler’s unyielding strength, and ALHIM adds the full council of divine forces executing that judgment. Together the formula encapsulates the active, punitive aspect of the Godhead as wielded in practical ritual.

Position on the Tree of Life

This formula belongs to the fifth sphere, Geburah (Severity), the Sephirah of divine law, war, and the root of all limitation. In the Great Work, AGLA · ALHIM is therefore the word of power pronounced when one must cut away the dross, destroy an obstacle, or impose the rigorous constraint that shapes a vessel fit for higher light.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The immediate planet of Geburah is Mars. AGLA · ALHIM thus aligns with the harsh, driving energy of the Red Planet—force, iron, choler, and the necessary violence that clears the ground for creation. In the scheme of the Tetramorph it governs the Lion (fire of judgment), and in the zodiac it touches the harsh degrees of Scorpio and Aries where Mars is strongest.

Historical context

The notariqon AGLA appears early in Jewish angelic literature, notably in the Sefer Raziel and later in the Key of Solomon, where it serves as a pentagram-charged name for banishing and protection. The addition of ALHIM (Elohim) is characteristic of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which systematically combined names to focus the Sephirothic forces. In their rituals, AGLA alone was the Lesser Banishing formula; AGLA · ALHIM was reserved for the more severe Middle Pillar operations and for invoking Geburah before a magical battle. Crowley absorbed the formula into Liber 777 by setting it at the fifth step of the column of Magical Formulæ, in parallel with the planet Mars and the number five. In his own The Vision and the Voice (Enochian work), echoes of the same name govern the harsh Aires of the 25th Aire, where the punishing aspect of the divine is confronted.

In table 777, AGLA · ALHIM stands at step 5 of the column of Magical Formulæ, corresponding to the Sephirah Geburah. It is the name that the mage pronounces when the will must act without mercy—a hammer-syllable that breaks the old and shapes the new under the law of the Five.“
