AUMGN
AUMGN is a magical formula that expands the classical Hindu syllable AUM (Om) by appending a silent, aspirated N, which is often interpreted as the Gnostic N or the N of Nuit. This addition transforms the threefold sound of creation, preservation, and dissolution into a fourfold formula that culminates in silence, representing the absorption of all manifestation into the void. The formula is central to Thelemic practice, particularly in the invocation of the Holy Guardian Angel, as it encapsulates the cycle of emanation and return.
Position on the Tree of Life
AUMGN corresponds to the 24th Path on the Tree of Life, which is the path of Samekh (ס), the 15th letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This path connects Yesod (Foundation) to Tiphereth (Beauty) and is associated with the astrological sign of Sagittarius, symbolizing aspiration, archery, and the direct aim toward the divine. The formula AUMGN on this path signifies the silent, focused concentration required to traverse the Abyss and achieve union with the Higher Self.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
AUMGN is linked to the element of Spirit (Akasha) and the planet Saturn in its most abstract sense, as Saturn represents the boundary of manifestation and the gateway to the infinite. However, its primary astrological correspondence is through the path of Samekh, which is ruled by Sagittarius, a fire sign of expansion and transcendence. The formula thus embodies the archer's arrow, piercing through illusion to reach the silent center of being.
Historical context
The formula AUMGN was introduced by Aleister Crowley in his system of Thelemic magic, first appearing in Liber AL vel Legis (The Book of the Law) and later elaborated in works such as Liber 777 and Magick in Theory and Practice. Crowley derived it from the traditional AUM of Hindu and Buddhist tantra, which represents the three states of consciousness—waking, dreaming, and deep sleep—and their corresponding deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. By adding the silent N, Crowley incorporated the fourth state, turiya, or pure consciousness, which is beyond sound and form. This innovation reflects his synthesis of Eastern and Western esotericism, emphasizing the Gnostic concept of the silent, unknowable Godhead. In Liber 777, AUMGN is listed under the column of Magical Formulæ, specifically at step 24, where it is paired with the Hebrew letter Samekh and the zodiacal sign Sagittarius. This placement underscores its role as a formula for the aspirant's journey through the Abyss, where all words and names dissolve into the ultimate silence.
In the table of Liber 777, AUMGN appears at step 24, corresponding to the 24th Path (Samekh) and the Magical Formulæ column. This cell is otherwise empty in many editions, but Crowley's assignment here emphasizes the formula's function as a silent, self-contained key to the Great Work, distinct from the more verbose formulas like ABRAHADABRA or IAO that appear at other steps.
