ABRAHADABRA · IAO:INRI

ABRAHADABRA · IAO:INRI is a compound magical formula that unites two of the most potent verbal keys in Western esotericism. ABRAHADABRA, the eleven-letter Word of the Aeon revealed in The Book of the Law, encodes the unity of the Macrocosm and Microcosm, the reconciliation of opposites, and the formula of the Great Work. IAO:INRI combines the Gnostic invocation of IAO (the solar demiurge) with the Christian alchemical formula INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum), which in esoteric interpretation stands for the four elements or the stages of the alchemical opus: Igne Natura Renovatur Integra. Together, this glyph signifies the complete cycle of death, resurrection, and transfiguration as realized through the Thelemic current.

Position on the Tree of Life

This formula is assigned to the sixth Sephirah, Tiphereth, the sphere of the Sun, Beauty, and the sacrificed god. Tiphereth is the heart of the Tree, the point of equilibrium between the Pillars of Mercy and Severity, and the center of the microcosmic self. The union of ABRAHADABRA and IAO:INRI here represents the perfected human consciousness that has undergone the alchemical solve et coagula—the dissolution of the ego and its reintegration into the solar, divine image.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Tiphereth is ruled by the Sun, and this formula partakes of solar symbolism: ABRAHADABRA is the Word that shines forth as the Sun of the New Aeon, while IAO:INRI is the formula of the dying and reborn solar god. The conjunction of these two phrases at Tiphereth indicates the moment of illumination when the aspirant realizes their identity with the solar Logos.

Historical context

The formula IAO:INRI has deep roots in Gnosticism and early Christian heresiology. The name IAO (Yahweh) was used in magical papyri and Gnostic texts as a name of the supreme God or the Demiurge, often associated with the sun. The Christian cross formula INRI was reinterpreted by alchemists and Rosicrucians as a cipher for the process of purification and regeneration. In the 19th century, Éliphas Lévi and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn synthesized these into a single formula for the resurrection of the initiate. Aleister Crowley, in his system of Thelema, adopted IAO:INRI as a key formula for the Grade of Adeptus Minor, where the aspirant undergoes the symbolic death and rebirth on the Tree of Life. ABRAHADABRA, revealed in 1904, became the supreme Word of the Aeon, and its pairing with IAO:INRI in Liber 777 at Tiphereth underscores the continuity of the initiatic tradition: the old formula of the dying god is fulfilled and transcended by the new formula of the Crowned and Conquering Child.

In the table of Liber 777, ABRAHADABRA · IAO:INRI appears at the sixth step (Tiphereth) of the Magical Formulæ column, linking the solar sphere to the twin currents of Thelemic revelation and Osirian resurrection. This cell thus serves as a bridge between the Aeon of the Son and the Aeon of the Crowned Child, a single glyph for the complete alchemical opus of the Adept.
