BABALON · VITRIOL

BABALON · VITRIOL is a composite magical formula, fusing the name of the Thelemic Scarlet Woman, the Lady Babalon, with the classic alchemical acronym V.I.T.R.I.O.L.Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem (“Visit the interior of the earth; by rectifying you will find the hidden stone”). In the schema of Liber 777, this formula is assigned to the third sephirah, Binah, at scale-step 3, the sphere of Understanding, Saturn, and the Great Sea.

Position on the Tree of Life

This formula occupies the third position on the Tree of Life, Binah, the first fully receptive and feminine sephirah. Binah is the great supernal mother, the womb of all form, and the vessel of understanding. BABALON · VITRIOL therefore represents the formula of the Abyss-crossing, the descent into the deepest matter (the “interior of the earth”) to uncover the hidden stone—an operation of initiatic death and rebirth under the aegis of the Divine Mother. As a formula of Binah, it is the culmination of the supernal triad, receiving the force of Chokmah (VIAOV, step 2) and giving shape to the manifest formulae of Chesed (IHVH, step 4).

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Binah is attributed to Saturn, the slowest and most distant of the classical planets, ruler of limitation, time, and form. Hence BABALON · VITRIOL embodies the saturnine aspect of the Great Work: the patient, thorough, and often painful rectification of the base material within the sealed vessel of the earth (or the body). The “VITRIOL” portion specifically invokes the alchemical nigredo, the blackening and putrefaction necessary before the white stone can appear.

Historical context

The formula VITRIOL is one of the oldest surviving alchemical maxims, found in the works of Basil Valentine (attributed, 15th–16th century) and later in the emblematic engravings of the Atalanta Fugiens (1617). It directs the aspirant inward, into the earth of their own being, to discover the lapis philosophorum. In Thelema, Aleister Crowley identified the Babalon formula—the woman who rides the Beast and drinks the blood of the saints—as the key to the transubstantiation of the adept (see The Book of the Law and Liber 418). By merging these two streams, BABALON · VITRIOL becomes a double formula: the ecstatic, sacrificial current of Babalon united with the patient, earth-bound work of the alchemist. This pairing appears in Liber 777 as a binarian (3) expression of the “Magical Formulæ” column—the feminine receptacle receiving, digesting, and transforming the active principles of the paths above.

In Liber 777

At row CLXXXVII, column XLI, scale-step 3 (Binah), BABALON · VITRIOL stands as the only compound formula of its kind in the table. It is preceded by the supernal lightnings of Kether (empty at this scale) and Chokmah (VIAOV), and it gives rise to the Tetragrammaton (IHVH) in Chesed. Its partner at the opposite pole is VITRIOL alone, assigned to Malkuth (step 10), where the formula is completed in the Kingdom. BABALON · VITRIOL thus marks the moment when the alchemical secret is wed to the Thelemic mystery of the Scarlet Woman, grounding the highest spiritual understanding in the deepest matter.
