ON

ON is a short but potent magical Formula, a contraction of the divine name IAO. In Hebrew, the word means “strength” or “power,” and its numeric value is 120, the same as that of the letter Samekh and the word “support” (סָמָךְ). The spelling in Liber 777 uses the letters O-N as a direct transliteration of the Greek or Latin, but its force is universal: it is the sound of affirmation, a closing and a sealing of breath.

Position on the Tree of Life

ON appears at the 26th path on the Tree of Life, the path of the Moon (Yesod to Malkuth). This is the final descending path, where the subtle formulae of the middle pillar condense into the material world. As a formula, ON marks the point of crystallisation—the ultimate affirmation of the manifested word.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Because ON occupies the path of the Moon, it has a tacit lunar correspondence. The Moon rules the 26th path in the traditional assignment (where the 32nd path is Saturn and the 25th is Aquarius). The lunar nature of ON is not one of reflection but of reception: it receives the higher formula IAO and seals it into a single, self-contained unit of force.

Historical context

The formula ON appears in the grimoire tradition as a variant of the name IAO, which itself is a Gnostic corruption of the Tetragrammaton YHVH. The reduction IAO → ON is achieved by dropping the initial I and retaining the A and O, then adding the final N as a “mute” or “closed” consonant. This transformation is described in the magical papyri and later in the writings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In the Stele of Jeu (a Gnostic text), the formula ON is used to seal the breath during ritual invocation, rendering the magician impervious to hostile forces.

In Thelemic tradition, ON is emphasised in the commentaries to Liber AL vel Legis as the final word of the goddess Nuit: “I am the Headless One, and my name is ON.” The formula therefore carries the specific charge of closure and completion—it is the name that ends all names.

In the table of Liber 777

At the 26th step of the table (Path 25), the formula ON is listed as a primary magical formula. It stands alone, with no sibling formulae on the same row. Its neighbours in the column are AUMGN (Path 24) and the empty cells of Paths 27–31, making ON the last named formula before the termination of the series.
