TO MEGA QHRION

TO MEGA QHRION is a Greek transliteration of Τὸ Μέγα Θηρίον, 'The Great Beast'. It marks the rediscovery of the Beast archetype in twentieth-century occultism, a name that deliberately avoids refinement of the lower into the higher and instead accepts the untamed, phallic, and voracious as a legitimate mode of divine contact.

Position on the Tree of Life

This formula belongs to Path 19, the Qabalistic path of Resh—the sun's letter. Path 19 connects Tiphareth (Beauty, the sun center) to Yesod (Foundation, the lunar sphere). In the 777 scheme, this path is the conduit for direct solar energy into the astral body, and the Great Beast formula names the force that crosses that bridge without apology.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Path 19 is ruled by the Sun (Sol), and TO MEGA QHRION’s attribution falls under the solar column. Unlike the IAO formula (death-resurrection) or ABRAHADABRA (word of creation), the Beast formula is solar in its most glaring aspect: raw, generative, and consuming. It is the sun as leonine predator, not as healer.

Historical context

The formula is drawn primarily from the Thelemic current and appears in the works of Aleister Crowley, most notably within Liber AL vel Legis (The Book of the Law). There, the Beast is the central figure of the new aeon—partner to Babalon, the Scarlet Woman. The name itself echoes the Greek of the New Testament's Book of Revelation (ἐκ τοῦ θηρίου, 'out of the Beast'), but Crowley inverted its apocalyptic judgment into a dynamic of liberation: ‘the Beast that was, and is not, and yet is’ (Rev. 17:8) becomes, in Thelema, the primary symbol for the true Will in its most instinctual, unsocialized form.

Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice and The Vision and the Voice elaborate TO MEGA QHRION as an operational formula for calling upon the ‘Beast’ aspect of the magician—the raw life-force that precedes moral distinctions. The 777 table places it at Path 19 because that path is the solar bridge where pure, undifferentiated potency descends into form. In the wider Qabalistic tradition, it contrasts sharply with ‘VIAOV’ (Chokmah) or ‘IHVH’ (Chesed), which speak to creation through bound letters. TO MEGA QHRION is a name that names without binding—it evokes the beast directly, not as a symbol but as a presence.

777 Context

In Liber 777, the Great Beast formula occupies step 19 of Column XLI, the Magical Formulæ column. Unlike the surrounding entries (ABRAHADABRA on Path 18, ALIM on Path 13), this is the only formula in the column to carry a proper name from an external scripture. It sits between the solar-consciousness formula (ABRAHADABRA) and the lunar-alchemical formula (ALIM), marking it as the descent of raw solar will into the astral imagination.
