Cancer

Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon. Its symbol, the Crab, represents the creature that moves sideways, retreating into its shell when threatened, embodying the sign's protective, receptive, and tenacious nature. The glyph itself is often interpreted as the claws of the crab, holding together or enclosing. In Hebrew, Cancer is associated with the letter Cheth (ח), meaning 'fence' or 'enclosure,' which directly echoes the sign's concern with boundaries, the home, and the protective womb.

Position on the Tree of Life

Cancer occupies Path 18 on the Tree of Life, connecting the Sephirah Binah (Understanding) to Geburah (Severity). This path is the 'Intelligence of the House of Influence,' a channel through which the formless, receptive power of Binah is given a specific, protective, and defensive shape by the fiery, judgmental force of Geburah. The path's nature is one of containment and the establishment of limits, a necessary structure for further manifestation.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Astrologically, Cancer is the domicile of the Moon, which is its sole planetary ruler. This lunar rulership imbues Cancer with qualities of emotion, memory, fluctuation, and deep-seated habit. The Moon's phases—waxing, full, and waning—are mirrored in Cancer's own cycles of mood and its connection to the tides of the subconscious. In the zodiac, Cancer is the exaltation of Jupiter, suggesting a hidden potential for expansive growth and good fortune that emerges from its protective shell.

Historical Context

The association of Cancer with a crab or scarab is ancient, appearing in Babylonian astronomy as the 'Crab of the Sun' or 'Tortoise,' and later in Greek mythology as the giant crab Karkinos sent by Hera to distract Heracles. In Egyptian tradition, the scarab beetle, a symbol of creation and the rising sun, was linked to this sign due to its association with the summer solstice, when the sun reaches its highest northern declination. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Cancer is the zodiacal sign of the 'Child of the Waters,' and its symbol is the 'Crab' or 'Scarabaeus,' representing the soul's journey through the waters of creation. The path of Cheth is also linked to the Tarot trump The Chariot, which depicts a victorious warrior emerging from a city, guided by two sphinxes or horses, symbolizing the controlled direction of opposing forces—a perfect emblem for the cardinal water sign that navigates emotion with will.

In the table of Liber 777, Cancer appears at step 18, corresponding to the Path of Cheth. Its column VI English name is simply 'Cancer,' and it is placed within the broader context of the zodiacal correspondences, linking the sign to the number 18, the Hebrew letter Cheth, and the Tarot key of The Chariot.
