Earth

Earth (Latin: Terra) is the planet upon which humanity dwells, the third rock from the Sun in our solar system. Its name derives from Old English eorþe and Proto-Germanic erþō, rooted in the Indo-European er- (“ground, soil”). In astrological tradition, Earth is not a classical planet but a fixed element—the foundation of the four elements (Fire, Air, Water, Earth)—and corresponds to the Sephirah Malkuth in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.

Position on the Tree of Life

In the Kabbalistic system, Earth is assigned to Malkuth (the Kingdom), the tenth and lowest Sephirah. Malkuth is the sphere of the material world, the physical plane where the divine emanations crystallize into tangible form. It is the receptacle of all the higher Sephiroth, synthesizing their energies into concrete existence. Earth as a planet is thus the macrocosmic symbol of Malkuth, grounding the spiritual into the corporeal.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Traditionally, Earth is not considered a planet in astrology but rather the elemental substrate. However, in modern esoteric practice, Earth is associated with the Sephirah Malkuth and the element of Earth itself. Its correspondences include:

  • Planetary metal: Lead (heavy, dense, grounding).
  • Archangel: Sandalphon (the angel who bridges heaven and earth).
  • Color: Olive, russet, citrine, and black (the four colors of Malkuth).
  • Day of week: Saturday (the Sabbath, day of rest and material completion).
  • Tarot card: The World (Key 21), representing the culmination of the Great Work.

Historical context

Earth has been venerated in countless cultures as the Great Mother, Gaia, Tellus Mater. In alchemy, Earth is the prima materia, the base substance from which all transformation begins. Hermetic texts often refer to Earth as the “nurse” of metals, the matrix that receives the celestial influences. In Kabbalah, Malkuth is the “bride” of the microprosopus, the final stage where the divine plan manifests in the physical. The Zohar describes Earth as the “footstool” of the Lord, the place where the Shekinah dwells.

In Liber 777

In the table of Liber 777, Earth appears in row 32 bis (the 32nd path, Saturn, and the 32 bis column for Spirit). Its English column lists “Earth” as the subject, with correspondences including the planet Saturn (as the ruler of Malkuth), the element Earth, and the archangel Sandalphon. The row also cites the World tarot card and the color olive. This placement underscores Earth’s role as the terminal point of the Tree, the physical anchor of the entire system.
