Aries

Aries (♈︎) is the first sign of the zodiac, marked by the glyph of a ram's horns. The Latin Aries and Greek Krios both mean “ram,” reflecting the constellation's ancient identification with the golden-fleeced ram of Greek myth. In the Qabalistic system of Liber 777, Aries is assigned to Path 15, the path of Heh (ה) on the Tree of Life, which connects Chokmah to Tiphereth and governs the creative force of the Primal Will.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 15 (the Heh Path) is the fifth path of the Thirty‑Two Paths of Wisdom. It spans from Chokmah (Wisdom, the supernal Father) to Tiphereth (Beauty, the solar center), channeling the raw, impulsive energy of the Ram into balanced self‑expression. The path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Heh (ה), meaning “window,” and to the zodiac sign Aries, thus combining the elemental letter of Breath with the cardinal Fire sign.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Aries is the cardinal Fire sign—its essence is initiation, impulse, and the spark of new beginnings. Its planetary ruler is Mars, the sphere of Geburah (Severity) on the Tree, connecting Aries to martial force, will, and assertive action. In astrological magic, the Ram's energy is considered masculine, diurnal, and hot‑dry, aligned with the first decanate of the zodiac. The number 15 (Path 15) also links to the divine name Yah (יה) and to the zodiacal grade of the Heh formula, where the feminine letter Heh receives the fire of the father.

Historical context

Aries was recognized as the herald of spring in the ancient Near East. In Babylonian astronomy, the constellation was called MUL LUḪUŠGÀ, “the Hired Man,” associated with the agricultural season. By the Hellenistic period, it had become the Ram of the Argonauts, and Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos describes Arians as “headstrong, courageous, and fond of leadership.”

In Hermetic and Qabalistic magic, the correspondence of Aries with the Hebrew letter Heh appears in the Sepher Yetzirah, where Heh is one of the “mother letters” (though traditionally Aleph, Mem, Shin are the mothers; later adaptations variably assign Heh to a zodiac sign). The Golden Dawn system, which Crowley largely followed, solidified the attribution: Path 15 = Heh = Aries. The 777 table entry lists Aries in Column VI (English of Col. VI) for Row VII, along with its qabalistic numbers (15 as י־ה, Yod‑Heh) and the elemental formula of the Fire principle. The name Aries itself was standardized in medieval Latin astrolabes and almanacs, replacing earlier Greek Krios.

In Thelemic practice, Aries corresponds to the First Watch of the Night and the First Attu of the Tarot (the Emperor, card IV, associated with the Heh path). Crowley's The Book of Thoth states: “Aries is the starting‑point of the zodiac, the spring equinox, the sign of the Lamb that was slain, and the Ram that is the father of the flock.”

In the Table of Liber 777

At this step (Row VII, English of Col. VI), the named subject Aries appears as the zodiacal sign attributed to Path 15. The larger table includes its ruling planet (Mars), its magical image (a ram), and a specific divine name (YHVH Tzabaoth for the Path). The page serves as a reference for Qabalists, astrologers, and ritual practitioners who wish to align the fiery, impulsive nature of the Ram with the corresponding sephirotic and elemental forces on the Tree of Life.
