Jupiter
Jupiter is the fifth and largest planet in the solar system, known in classical mythology as the king of the gods and, in Qabalistic cosmology, as the sephirah Chesed (Mercy). It represents expansion, benevolence, authority, and the drive toward growth and meaning.
Its name derives from the Latin Jovis Pater ('Father Jove'), the sky-god and chief deity of the Roman pantheon, equated with the Greek Zeus. In astrological symbolism, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and its glyph—a crescent over a cross—signifies spirit rising above matter.
Position on the Tree of Life
Jupiter is the astrological attribution for the fourth sephirah, Chesed, on the Pillar of Mercy. It occupies a central place in the Supernal Triangle's outflow, representing the first fully formed archetype of loving-kindness and structure.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
Jupiter is associated with the number 4, the tetragrammaton, and the letter Daleth (door). Its correspondences in 777 include the operations of expansion, legal authority, generosity, and long-distance travel. In ritual, Jupiter's hour and seals are used to attract success, honor, and wealth.
Historical Context
Jupiter has been a focal point of celestial observation since antiquity. Babylonian astronomers recorded its movements as the star of Marduk, and the Romans dedicated the Ides (full moon) of each month to him. In Greek mythology, Zeus overthrew Kronos (Saturn) to establish a reign of order—a theme reflected in the astrological polarity of Jupiter's beneficence versus Saturn's restriction. The planet was central to medieval medico-astrological practice as the ruler of the liver, blood, and the sense of expansion; its 'Jovial' temperament was considered sanguine and hopeful. From the Hermetic Picatrix to Renaissance talismanic magic, Jupiter's image was inscribed on camelian or sapphire for prosperity and protection.
In the hermetic revival of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jupiter was classed among the 'benefic' planets and assigned to Chesed in the Golden Dawn's graded curriculum. Aleister Crowley expanded these correspondences in 777, linking the planet to the 21st Path of the Tree of Life—the Path of Qoph, the letter ruling Pisces—which channels the expansive influence of Jupiter into the material world through the element of Water.
Closing
In Liber 777, the name 'Jupiter' appears at Scale Step 21, Path 21, Column VII. It is the name of the planet that rules the 21st path—the letter Qoph and the zodiacal sign Pisces—and is invoked for the influence of boundless, compassionate growth.
