Sphere of Sol
Shemesh – The Sphere of Sol
Shemesh (שֶׁמֶשׁ), the Hebrew word for the Sun, designates the Sphere of Sol—the sixth Sephirah on the Tree of Life, Tiphereth, the central point of harmony and beauty. In the Kabbalistic schema, this sphere is the direct expression of solar radiance: a nexus where the divine influx of Keter becomes focused into a coherent, life-giving light.
Position on the Tree of Life
Tiphereth occupies the middle pillar, acting as the reconciling node between the upper Sephiroth of the right and left pillars. It is the “heart” of the Tree, the point where the forces of mercy (Chesed) and severity (Geburah) are balanced into a unified, beautiful whole. The Sphere of Sol thus represents the conscious self, the individual will illuminated by divine purpose.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
The astrological sign of the Sun, ☉, is the primary glyph for this sphere. In traditional astrology, the Sun signifies the core identity, vitality, and creative will. The Sphere of Sol in 777 is the planetary sphere of the Sun itself—not the star in the sky but the metaphysical emanation that corresponds to that star’s ethical and spiritual influence. Its planetary number is 6, and its associated intelligence is the Neschamah (the Divine Soul), reflecting the sun’s role as the source of spiritual illumination.
Historical Context
The attribution of the Sun to Tiphereth is a cornerstone of Western esoteric Kabbalah, standardized by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Earlier Jewish Kabbalistic texts, such as the Zohar, refer to Tiphereth as “the Holy One, blessed be He,” the bridegroom of the Shekinah (Malkuth)—a masculine, solar principle of revelation. The Sefer Yetzirah does not explicitly name the planets but associates the number six with the six directions of space, which came to be linked to Tiphereth’s centralizing function. During the Renaissance, Christian Kabbalists like Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Johann Reuchlin integrated the seven classical planets, placing Sol as the heart of the celestial hierarchy. By the late 19th century, the Golden Dawn codified the solar correspondence into systematic tables, drawing on the Hebrew letter Vau (the world of the Sun) and the number 30 of the Solar Path, alongside the Sphere itself. The Sopher Yetzirah’s section on the “six simple letters” finds its apex in Vau, the letter of Tiphereth, “the seizer, the judge, the word of power.” Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777 thus enshrines the Sphere of Sol as the harmonic center of the Tree, from which all planetary spheres receive their reflected light.
In Liber 777
In the columns of Liber 777, the Sphere of Sol appears in the seventh row (English of Col. VI), with its associated god-forms, magical weapons, plants, and scents. It is the source of the magical formula “Sol,” used in rituals of personal integration, illumination, and the balancing of opposing forces. The table confirms the sphere as the seat of the solar consciousness, mediating the light of the One into the many.
