Sphere of Mars

The Sphere of Mars is the fifth Sephirah on the Qabalistic Tree of Life, called Geburah in Hebrew (גבורה), meaning "Severity" or "Strength." It represents the raw, dynamic force of divine judgment, severity, and unbridled energy. On the Tree, it sits just below Binah (Understanding) and across from Chesed (Mercy), forming the fifth scale step and the second pillar—the Pillar of Severity. Its astrological correspondence is the planet Mars, bringing the archetypes of war, courage, and assertive action. Historically, the planet Mars has been associated with the god of war in Roman mythology and Ares in Greek tradition, symbolizing conflict, passion, and pioneering energy. In astrology, Mars rules the signs Aries and Scorpio, and it is linked to iron, fire, and the principle of assertion. In the Sephirah, this manifests as the active, purifying force that breaks down obstacles, representing the stern aspect of the divine that enforces cosmic law through destruction and limitation. In esoteric traditions such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Geburah is the sphere of the Archangel Khamael ("Burning One") and the Order of Seraphim, embodying the wrath and justice of God. In Liber 777, at scale step 5 (Geburah), the Sphere of Mars is the named subject, connecting the sephirah directly to the planetary archetype in the English column of row VII, where it is listed among the ten spheres for the table of correspondences.
