Virgo

Virgo (♍︎) is the sixth sign of the zodiac, and its name is Latin for “virgin,” but its most ancient symbolism is not primarily about chastity. The glyph, a stylized “M” with a loop, is thought to derive from the Greek letters ΠΑ (for Παρθένος, virgin) or to represent the sexual organs of a female, but the most direct reading is of a sheaf of wheat, implying fecundity rather than abstinence. The constellation Virgo is one of the oldest known, appearing in the Babylonian “Furrow” (AB.SIN), identified with the goddess Shala, who holds an ear of grain. The brightest star in Virgo is Spica, meaning “ear of grain” in Latin, confirming this agricultural core. The figure is thus the Mother of Harvest, the eternal feminine principle of nature at the moment of ripening and discernment.

Position on the Tree of Life

Virgo corresponds to Path 20 on the Tree of Life, which runs between Hod (Splendor, the sphere of intellect and analysis) and Tiphereth (Beauty, the central sphere of harmony and the Sun). This path is assigned the Hebrew letter Yod (י), which means “hand” or “fist.” Yod is the smallest letter in the alphabet, yet it is the foundation of all other letters, signifying the seed-point of creation, self-sacrifice, and the act of focusing the infinite into a single, distinct point. The Tarot trump for this path is The Hermit (Atu IX), the veiled figure standing alone on a peak, holding a lantern. This card’s gesture of withdrawal for the sake of inner light aligns perfectly with Virgo’s sign-nature: the discrimination gained by sifting the useless from the essential. On this step, Virgo is the power of isolation that begets clarity.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

As a zodiacal sign, Virgo is ruled by Mercury (in traditional astrology) or by Ceres (in modern asteroid usage), but the Liber 777 system holds to the Mercurial rulership. Virgo is an Earth sign, mutable in quality, making it analytical, critical, and service-oriented. The symbol’s duality (virgin and wheat) expresses the paradox of pure potential brought into actuality through discernment and work. Mercury’s influence here turns the intellect toward practical ends, classification, and the perfection of material forms—hence the common association with medicine, hygiene, and crafts. The number 20 in the 777 table, derived from the path count, also resonates with the Tarot number of The Hermit (9 in the major arcana, but here the path’s own integer 20), echoing a retreat into inner law before manifestation.

Historical context

Virgo’s history in the Western esoteric tradition is deep. In the Tetrabiblos of Ptolemy, it is described as a feminine, earthy sign, representing “the reaper of harvests.” In the Picatrix, the sign is associated with colors of green and black, and with herbs that bind and purify. The 16th-century magician Cornelius Agrippa, in Three Books of Occult Philosophy, assigns Virgo to the Tuesday hour of Mercury, noting its influence over memory, writing, and the healing arts. The inclusion of Virgo in the Kabbalistic schema of the 32 paths came through the fusion of astrological and Qabalistic systems in the Renaissance, culminating in the Golden Dawn’s attributions as codified by Mathers and Crowley. In the hermetic Order, Virgo on Path 20 is the “vestibule of the Sanctuary,” where the aspirant refines their own nature to become a clear vessel for the higher light of Tiphereth. The medieval Hebrew Sefer Yetzirah describes the letter Yod, which rules this path, as the domain of “the sense of touch,” which fits Virgo’s fineness of perception.

The value in Liber 777

In the table of Liber 777, the cell for Virgo at this step—Path 20, in Col. VI (English names of the Major Arcana)—contains the primary attribution: the planet Mercury as the ruler of Virgo, the zodiacal sign itself, and the Hebrew letter Yod. The supporting correspondences (in sibling columns) include the number 10 (the value of Yod, and also the number of Malkuth, the Kingdom, showing that Virgo’s power is to bring spirit into matter), the colors yellow and citrine (Mercurial and earthy, respectively), and the magical images of a man in solitude holding a lamp. The text does not replace the object but names it: at this step, the goddess who sifts the harvest is the archetype of discrimination.
