Libra

Libra (Latin for 'balance' or 'scales') is the seventh astrological sign of the zodiac, spanning 180°–210° celestial longitude. Its symbol, ♎, depicts the scales of justice, reflecting its core themes of equilibrium, harmony, and fairness. In the Hermetic Qabalah, Libra corresponds to Path 22 on the Tree of Life, connecting Binah (Understanding) to Geburah (Severity) and embodying the principle of measured judgment.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 22 is the twenty-second path of the Tree of Life, attributed to the Hebrew letter Lamed (ל) and the zodiac sign Libra. This path bridges the third sephirah Binah (Understanding) with the fifth sephirah Geburah (Severity), symbolizing the balancing of harsh judgment with compassionate understanding. The path’s number, 22, also corresponds to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet and the 22 Major Arcana of the Tarot, where Libra is linked to the card Justice (VIII in Crowley’s Thoth deck).

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Libra is a cardinal air sign, ruled by Venus. Its planetary ruler imparts a love of beauty, diplomacy, and social grace, while the exaltation of Saturn in Libra adds a sense of responsibility and moral structure. In traditional astrology, Libra governs partnerships, law, and aesthetics, and its element of air emphasizes intellectual balance and the exchange of ideas.

Historical context

The scales as a symbol of justice date back to ancient Egypt, where the goddess Ma’at weighed the hearts of the dead against her feather of truth. The Greek goddess Themis and the Roman Justitia also carried scales, reinforcing Libra’s association with law and equity. In Babylonian astronomy, the constellation was known as Zibanitum (the scales) and was considered a sacred balance between the spring and autumn equinoxes. The sign entered Hellenistic astrology as the seventh zodiacal sign, and its Latin name Libra was solidified by Roman writers such as Manilius. In the medieval and Renaissance magical traditions, Libra was linked to the angelic order of the Cherubim (or, in some systems, the Archangels of the Air) and to the element of air in the microcosm.

In Liber 777

At the step of Path 22, Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777 lists Libra as the subject of the column “English of Col. VI.” Here, Libra is paired with the Hebrew letter Lamed, the number 30, and a constellation of correspondences including the color green, the scent of galbanum, the magical image of a man holding a pair of scales, and the tarot trump Justice. These associations are drawn from the broader Hermetic and Qabalistic synthesis that Crowley systematized, providing a dense symbolic matrix for meditation and ritual work.
