Apu-t—the Left Ear

Apu-t is an ancient Egyptian canine deity, a form of the jackal-god Anubis, whose name means "Opener of the Ways." As the Left Ear, Apu-t embodies the receptive, intuitive faculty of hearing, the passive channel through which divine will or the voice of the gods is first perceived. In the microcosmic anatomy of the Perfected Man, the left ear corresponds to the path of spiritual listening, distinct from the active, declarative function of the right ear.

Position on the Tree of Life

Apu-t—the Left Ear is assigned to Path 21, the twenty-first path of the Tree of Life, which connects the sephirah Chesed (Mercy) to the sephirah Tiphereth (Beauty). This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Kaph (כ), meaning "palm" or "hand," and to the zodiacal sign of Jupiter. The left ear, as a passive organ, aligns with the receptive aspect of this path—the absorption of the expansive, merciful influence of Chesed into the balanced center of Tiphereth.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

While the path itself is ruled by Jupiter, the specific attribution of the left ear to Apu-t links the organ to the lunar and funerary symbolism of Anubis. The left side of the body is traditionally associated with the moon, the subconscious, and the receptive feminine principle. Thus, the Left Ear is the lunar ear, attuned to the whisper of the dead, the secrets of the underworld, and the silent currents of intuition.

Historical context

Apu-t (also rendered as Ap-wer, Upuaut, or Ophois) was originally a separate deity from Anubis in Upper Egyptian theology, depicted as a jackal or a man with a jackal's head. His name, "Opener of the Ways," refers to his role as a psychopomp who clears the path for the deceased through the underworld, and as a scout who precedes the king in battle. In the Pyramid Texts, Apu-t is invoked to open the way for the king's ascent to the sky. By the New Kingdom, Apu-t was often syncretized with Anubis, and his funerary role merged with that of the embalmer god. The specific association of Apu-t with the ear is not found in surviving Egyptian texts, but it arises in the Hermetic and Qabalistic microcosmic schema of the Golden Dawn, where each part of the divine body is assigned a corresponding god-form. The left ear, as the passive receptor, is naturally linked to the psychopomp who hears the call of the dead and opens the way for their journey.

In the table of Liber 777, Apu-t—the Left Ear appears at the scale step of the Perfected Man, the twenty-first path, as the receptive counterpart to the active right ear (also Apu-t, at path 32). This pairing underscores the dual nature of hearing: the left ear receives the inner voice, the right ear declares the outer word. Together, they complete the faculty of spiritual audition in the perfected microcosm.
