Hathor—the Right Eye
Hathor—the Right Eye is the Egyptian goddess Hathor in her aspect as the solar, protective right eye of Ra. The name "Hathor" (Egyptian Ḥwt-Ḥr) means "House of Horus," linking her to the sky and the celestial eye. As the Right Eye, she embodies the active, fiery, and creative solar principle, distinct from the lunar, receptive Left Eye (also associated with Hathor in other contexts).
Position on the Tree of Life
This correspondence is assigned to Path 30, the 30th path of the Tree of Life, which connects Yesod (Foundation) to Malkuth (Kingdom). This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Resh (ר), meaning "head" or "face," and to the Sun. As the Right Eye, Hathor here represents the perfected, integrated vision of the divine, the culmination of the solar current as it descends into the material world.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the 777 system, Path 30 is governed by the Sun (Sol). Hathor—the Right Eye thus corresponds to the solar radiance, the active, conscious, and illuminating power of the Sun. This is the eye that sees, judges, and creates, the fiery gaze of the god that brings forth and sustains life.
Historical context
Hathor is one of the most ancient and complex Egyptian deities, appearing in the Predynastic period. She was a sky goddess, a cow goddess, and a goddess of love, music, and joy. The myth of the "Distant Goddess" or the "Eye of Ra" tells of the solar eye (often identified with Hathor, Sekhmet, or Tefnut) that leaves Ra and must be brought back. In this myth, the eye is a fierce, independent entity, a daughter of Ra that can become a destructive lioness (Sekhmet) or a gentle, joyful cow (Hathor). The right eye specifically was associated with the sun and with the active, protective, and sometimes wrathful aspect of the goddess. In the Pyramid Texts, the king is said to be conceived by the "Eye of Horus" and born of Hathor, linking the solar eye to royal power and rebirth. The Eye of Ra is also a symbol of the king's authority and the sun's life-giving and destructive power. In later syncretic traditions, Hathor was identified with Isis and with the Greek Aphrodite, but the solar eye aspect remained potent, especially in the context of the sun's daily journey through the underworld.
In Liber 777
At Path 30, the scale of "The Perfected Man," Hathor—the Right Eye is the perfected, integrated vision of the divine, the solar eye that sees and creates the world. It is the culmination of the solar current, the active, conscious, and illuminating power of the Sun, the eye that judges and brings forth life.
