[Serqet—the Teeth.] As 6.

Serqet is the scorpion-goddess of ancient Egypt, whose name is often translated as “she who causes to breathe” — a funerary epithet pointing directly to the work of the Teeth. In the Egyptian pantheon, Serqet was the guardian of the fourth canopic jar (of Qebehsenuef, the falcon-headed son of Horus) and a protectress of the viscera. Her emblem, the scorpion, is a creature that strikes with venom and then withdraws; its sting is a sudden, irreversible threshold. This is the nature of the Teeth as an instrument of transition: they grind, sever, and open the way for the breath to pass through.

Position on the Tree of Life

The named subject appears as the sixth correspondence (As 6) at Path 31, the path that runs from Chesed to Geburah on the Tree of Life. Path 31 is the letter Shin, which means “tooth” (or “fang“), and is assigned the element of Fire and the spiritual experience of the Vision of the Holy Guardian Angel. The row is titled The Perfected Man, and Serqet‑the‑Teeth occupies the cell that describes the perfected state of that path: a mouth that has been rendered fit to speak truth, to utter the Word, and to consume only what is essential. This is not the soft mouth of infancy but the set of teeth that have cut through the illusions of the lower worlds.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Shin is the element of Fire, and its astrological attribution is the Sun in its most active, purgative mode. The Teeth are the instrument by which the Fire of Spirit operates upon matter: they divide, they burn through dross, and they leave only ash that can be reformed. Serqet carries this Fire in the form of venom — a liquid fire that either kills or purifies, depending on the state of the one who receives it.

Historical Context

Serqet appears as early as the First Dynasty (c. 3000 BCE) on ivory labels and stone vessels. Her cult center was at Kom al‑Banat in the Fayyum, but her presence is attested throughout Egypt, from the Delta to Nubia. Unlike many goddesses, she was not primarily a mother or a wife; her power was solitary, venomous, and direct. She was often depicted as a woman with a scorpion on her head, or as a scorpion with a woman’s head, and she is shown assisting Isis and Nephthys in the protection of Osiris’s body. The Pyramid Texts call her “she who causes the throat to breathe,” and the Coffin Texts invoke her as “the lady of the beautiful house” who opens the mouth of the deceased. In the funerary literature (the Book of the Dead, spell 36), she is the one who repels the serpent Apep, the great enemy of the Sun. Her name is used as the actual word for “scorpion” in the medical papyri, where scorpion‑bite spells are recited over the patient, and the goddess is called upon to withdraw the venom from the “mouth of the wound” — a direct parallel to the Teeth withdrawing poison from the soul.

In Liber 777, Serqet as the Teeth stands at the level where the Fire of Shin has been fully assimilated into the perfected human organism. The mouth is no longer a gate for mere food, but an organ of spiritual utterance whose teeth are the agents of final division: they sever the soul from its attachments and allow the breath to issue pure.

At the scale step 31, the cell value is “As 6,” meaning it shares the number 6 (Tiphereth) and thus indicates that the Teeth of Serqet are the vehicle for achieving the beauty, harmony, and sacrificial death that defines the solar center. The Perfected Man opens his mouth, and the scorpion‑goddess gives him the bite that is also the gift of breath.
