As 10, for Ayin means Eye

The Eye of Hoor is a theogonic and microcosmic symbol drawn from the Egyptian pantheon, specifically the restored or avenging eye of Horus (Hoor). In the context of the Qabalistic microcosm, this eye is assigned to the buttocks and anus—the lowest, most material, and excretory part of the human form. The name "Hoor" is a Hellenized or Thelemic rendering of Horus, the falcon-headed god of kingship and the sky, whose eye was torn out by Set and later restored by Thoth. This restored eye, the Wedjat, became a potent symbol of wholeness, sacrifice, and regeneration. Here, however, it is not the celestial eye of vision but the "eye" of the hindmost, the gateway of elimination and the seat of the lowest bodily functions, grounding the divine in the most physical and base aspect of the Perfected Man.

Position on the Tree of Life

This correspondence belongs to Path 26, which connects Malkuth (the Kingdom) to Yesod (the Foundation) on the Tree of Life. Path 26 is the Hebrew letter Ayin (ע), meaning "Eye." The numerical value of Ayin is 70, and its astrological attribution is Capricorn. This path represents the materialization of vision into physical form, the descent of the seer into the body, and the paradoxical union of the highest spiritual perception with the lowest bodily function. The Eye of Hoor at the buttocks and anus thus embodies the complete integration of spirit and matter, where the divine eye looks out from the very seat of physical elimination.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Ayin is attributed to Capricorn, an earth sign ruled by Saturn. Capricorn is the sign of ambition, structure, limitation, and the goat that climbs the mountain. Its association with the anus and buttocks is not accidental: Capricorn governs the knees and the skeletal system in traditional astrology, but in the Qabalistic microcosm, the hindmost parts correspond to the earthiest, most Saturnine aspect of the body. The Eye of Hoor here is the watchful, patient, and enduring gaze of the goat-god, fixed upon the material world from its lowest point. This is the eye that sees through the veil of matter, even from the depths of the physical body.

Historical context

The assignment of the Eye of Hoor to the buttocks and anus appears in the microcosmic tables of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which were later compiled and expanded by Aleister Crowley in Liber 777. This system maps the parts of the human body to the 32 Paths of the Tree of Life, drawing on Egyptian, Hebrew, and classical sources. The Eye of Hoor (or the Wedjat) is traditionally a protective symbol, often placed on amulets and coffins to guard the deceased. In the microcosmic scheme, its placement at the anus is a deliberate inversion: the highest symbol of divine vision and restoration is placed at the lowest, most excretory orifice. This reflects the Qabalistic principle that the divine is present in all parts of the body, even the most base, and that the Perfected Man integrates spirit and matter without hierarchy. The buttocks and anus are also associated with the element of Earth in its most passive and receptive form, and with the sephirah Malkuth, which is the final material manifestation of the divine.

In the table of Liber 777, the Eye of Hoor appears at the 10th step of the scale of the Perfected Man, corresponding to Malkuth. This is the same position where, in other columns, we find the number 10, the planet Earth, and the material world. The buttocks and anus are the physical seat of this correspondence, grounding the divine eye in the most literal sense. The Eye of Hoor here is not the eye that sees, but the eye that is seen—the mark of the god upon the lowest part of the body, a sign that the divine vision extends even to the most hidden and rejected places.
