The Eye of Hoor—the Buttocks and Anus

The Eye of Hoor—the Buttocks and Anus is a glyph of the perfected material vehicle, the seat of the lowest yet most stable foundation in the microcosmic temple. The name ‘Hoor’ (or Horus) here denotes the crowned and conquering child, whose eye is not the organ of sight but the hidden aperture of elimination and generation—the ‘eye that sees not’ yet completes the circuit of the body. In the symbolism of the Stele of Revealing and the Thelemic current, this pair represents the base of the spinal column and the gateway of the earth, where the fire of the kundalini is anchored and the dross of manifestation is cast out.

Position on the Tree of Life

This correspondence occupies the tenth Sephirah, Malkuth, the Kingdom—the sphere of the physical world, the elements, and the final solidification of divine energy. As the ‘Perfected Man’ row indicates, the Buttocks and Anus are the foundation of the human form, the point where the celestial currents touch the earth and become stable. In the microprosopus, Malkuth is the Bride, the Shekinah, and here the Eye of Hoor is the seal of that union, the ‘eye’ that is also the gate of the underworld.

Historical context

The attribution derives from the Egyptian funerary and temple texts, where the god Horus is often depicted with a ‘wedjat’ or ‘udjat’ eye—the healed eye of Horus that was torn out by Set and restored by Thoth. This eye became a symbol of sacrifice, healing, and the offering of the whole self. In the esoteric physiology of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777, the body of the god is mapped onto the Tree of Life, with each part corresponding to a Sephirah. The Buttocks and Anus, as the base of the spine and the exit of the alimentary canal, are the physical analogue of Malkuth—the densest, most material, and most ‘earthy’ part of the divine anatomy. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead, the deceased is often instructed to ‘open the mouth’ and ‘see with the eye of Horus,’ but the lower orifices are equally sacred as the channels of purification and the seat of the serpent power. The ‘Eye of Hoor’ in this context is the anus, the ‘eye that does not weep’ but excretes, and the buttocks are the twin hills of the earth, the foundation of the throne of the perfected one.

In the Thelemic system, the phrase ‘The Eye of Hoor—the Buttocks and Anus’ appears in the 777 table as a direct inversion of the usual solar symbolism: the eye that is below, the eye that is hidden, the eye that is the gate of the earth. This is the ‘eye’ of the Sphinx, the riddle of the body, and the point where the microcosm and macrocosm meet in the act of elimination and the grounding of spiritual force.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Malkuth is ruled by the Earth element and is associated with the planet Saturn in its most material aspect, as well as the sphere of the elements. The Buttocks and Anus, as the seat of the earth, correspond to the fixed, stable, and receptive qualities of the physical plane. In the astrological body, this region is governed by the sign Capricorn (the goat’s hindquarters) and the planet Saturn, which rules the bones, the base of the spine, and the eliminative functions.

Closing

In Liber 777, at the step of Malkuth (10), the Eye of Hoor—the Buttocks and Anus stands as the final and most concrete correspondence of the Perfected Man, grounding the entire ladder of the divine body in the earth of the physical form.
