Nu—the Hair

Nu is the Egyptian goddess of the sky, often depicted as a star-covered woman arching over the earth. In the context of the microcosmic correspondences of the human body, "Nu—the Hair" refers to the hair as a symbol of her vast, encompassing nature. The hair, like the sky, is a boundary and a veil, extending outward from the head and connecting the individual to the infinite.

Position on the Tree of Life

This correspondence appears at the scale step of 0 (Three zeros), which is the realm of the Perfected Man. This is the state of completion and union with the divine, where the individual has transcended the limitations of the separate self. The hair, as the outermost and most ethereal part of the body, represents the final point of contact with the infinite, the point where the perfected individual touches the boundless sky of Nu.

Historical context

The identification of Nu with the hair is not a common motif in mainstream Egyptology but is a specific and potent symbolic attribution within the Hermetic Qabalah. The goddess Nu (or Nut) is the sky, the starry vault, and the mother of the gods. Her body is the firmament. The hair, in this system, is seen as a microcosmic reflection of her starry body. Each strand is a ray of light, a thread of the cosmic web. This attribution draws on the idea that the hair, like the sky, is a place of power and mystery. In many traditions, hair is a source of personal strength (Samson) and a conduit for spiritual energy. By placing Nu at the hair, the text links the most personal and individual aspect of the body (the hair, which grows from the crown) to the most universal and impersonal divine principle (the infinite sky).

In the table of Liber 777, Nu—the Hair is the specific correspondence for the Perfected Man at the zero step. It is the final, subtle emanation of the divine into the physical form, a reminder that even in the most perfected state, the individual remains a point of contact with the boundless.
