3-я Вспышка Молнии

The Third Flash of Lightning (3-ya Vspyshka Molnii) is the third sequential discharge of the lightning bolt that descends from Kether to Malkuth on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. In the Russian Kabbalistic tradition, this term denotes the specific moment when the divine energy, having passed through the abstract unity of Kether and the dynamic polarity of Chokmah, enters the sphere of Binah—Understanding. The name is literal: a flash (vspyshka) that is third (3-ya) in a series of ten, each representing a sephirah.

Position on the Tree of Life

This flash strikes at Binah, the third sephirah on the Pillar of Severity. Binah is the great feminine, receptive principle—the Supernal Mother who gives form to the formless. As the lightning descends, the Third Flash marks the transition from pure potential (Kether) and active wisdom (Chokmah) into the first vessel of limitation and structure. Here, the lightning begins to be shaped, contained, and defined, setting the stage for the subsequent seven flashes that will build the lower worlds.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Binah is attributed to Saturn (Shabbathai). The Third Flash thus carries the heavy, binding, and formative qualities of Saturn: restriction, time, depth, and the womb of creation. It is the flash that solidifies, that imposes the laws of causality and form upon the raw light. In the system of Liber 777, this flash aligns with the number 3, the number of Saturn and of the Great Sea—the waters of Binah that receive and shape the lightning.

Historical Context

The concept of the "Flashing Lightning" (Vspyshka Molnii) as a sequence of ten distinct emanations is rooted in the Russian occult revival of the early 20th century, particularly within the circles influenced by G. O. Mebes (Grigory Ottonovich Mebes) and his students. Mebes’ lectures on the Kabbalah, later compiled as the "Course of the Encyclopedia of Occultism," systematized the Tree of Life with a unique emphasis on the dynamic, sequential nature of creation. The lightning flash—the "path of the arrow"—is the active, masculine line of force that descends through the sephiroth, while the serpent (Zmey) winds upward through the paths. The Third Flash, as the first point of limitation, is critical: it is the moment when the infinite light accepts the veil of finitude. This tradition was further elaborated by Vladimir Shmakov and later by the Russian esotericist and artist Boris Mouravieff, though the specific term "3-ya Vspyshka Molnii" appears most consistently in the tables of correspondences derived from Mebes’ system, which were later integrated into the expanded Russian editions of Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777.

In the table of Liber 777, the Third Flash of Lightning stands at the intersection of the Sword and the Serpent—the dual currents of creation and return. Here, at step 3 (Binah), the flash is no longer the unbound brilliance of the first two flashes; it is the lightning that has entered the womb, the flash that becomes the seed of all subsequent form. It is the sword that cuts the first boundary, and the serpent that begins its coiled ascent from the depths of understanding.
