5th Plane, Right Pillar

The 5th Plane, Right Pillar is the specific location of the sephirah Netzach (Victory) on the right-hand side of the Tree of Life. This is the seventh emanation from the divine, poised on the Pillar of Mercy, the active, expansive force of the Qabalah. In the symbolic architecture of the Tree, the Right Pillar represents the outflowing, masculine principle of Chesed (Mercy) and Chokmah (Wisdom), and the 5th Plane is the level at which this energy becomes structured in the sphere of emotion, desire, and natural harmony. The number 5 here denotes the fifth plane of the overall Qabalistic cosmic system, counting from the highest, and the alignment on the Right Pillar places it in the flow of unceasing, generous force.

Position on the Tree of Life

The 5th Plane, Right Pillar corresponds to the seventh sephirah, Netzach, which is the sphere of Victory, eternity, and the core of the astral world. It stands at Step 7 of the Tree, directly below the fourth sephirah, Chesed (also on the Right Pillar), and across from the 5th Plane, Left Pillar (Hod). It is the level where the raw, formless outpouring of the higher Right Pillar concretizes into the vibrant, emotional force of nature.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The fixed star of the 5th Plane, Right Pillar is Venus, the planet of love, art, beauty, and the regenerative power of nature. This correspondence places the sphere of Netzach under the astrological influence of the evening star, binding the 5th Plane to the alchemical forces of copper, the musical harmony of the spheres, and the generative vitality of the natural world. The Venusian association deepens the meaning of Victory here—not conquest, but the triumph of harmony, attraction, and the enduring power of passion and fertility.

Historical context

The concept of the 5th Plane, Right Pillar as a distinct cosmic level emerges from the Renaissance Qabalah, particularly the works of Johann Reuchlin and later the Hermetic Qabalists of the Golden Dawn. In the 777 system, Aleister Crowley systematized the Sephiroth into a grid of 32 steps, each with a plane and pillar designation. The 5th Plane is derived from the traditional Qabalistic numbering of the sephirah as the fifth counted from Kether (1) down to Malkuth (10), aligning with the medieval Hebrew text Sefer Yetzirah and the later commentaries of Moses Cordovero. The Right Pillar designation was explicitly tabulated in the 777 correspondences to map the active, fiery, and merciful paths, distinguishing Netzach from its left-pillar counterpart, Hod. This specific placement was critical for the Golden Dawn's magical system, where ritual operations, invocations, and talismanic magic were calibrated to the pillar polarity of the practitioner's intent.

In the 777 table, the 5th Plane, Right Pillar appears as the cell for Step 7, row 'The Tree of Life', placing Netzach in the structure of the cosmic planes. The number 5 here is the plane number, while 'Right Pillar' is the qualitative descriptor. This synergizes with the traditional god-forms associated with this sphere: the angelic order of the Elohim (the Gods), the divine name Jehovah Tzabaoth (Lord of Hosts), and the magical image of a beautiful, naked woman. The 5th Plane, Right Pillar thus serves as a technical key for the Qabalist to locate Netzach within the skeleton of the mystical universe.
