Pathjoins 8–9

Pathjoins 8–9, also known as Path 30 on the Tree of Life, is the connecting route between the sephiroth Hod (8) and Yesod (9). In the Hebrew alphabet it is assigned the letter Lamed (ל) and in astrology the sign Libra, the Scales. This path represents the balancing of intellectual analysis (Hod) with the formative, subconscious energies of Yesod, a bridge that tempers logic with intuition.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 30 runs from Hod, the fifth sephirah on the left pillar, to Yesod, the sixth sephirah on the middle pillar. It lies on the lower half of the Tree, below the central sun of Tiphereth, and is the only direct connection between the sphere of splendor and the foundation. Its position makes it a critical conduit for the descent of structured thought into the realm of dreams, instincts, and sexual energy.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Lamed, the twelfth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, corresponds to Libra. The glyph of Libra—the scales—perfectly captures the essence of this path: the need to weigh, judge, and harmonize opposing forces. No planet is directly assigned to this path in the traditional 777 schema; instead, the sign itself governs the balancing act between the intellectual rigor of Hod and the fluid, receptive nature of Yesod.

Historical context

The path joining Hod and Yesod appears in the earliest Kabbalistic diagrams of the Tree of Life. The Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation) describes the thirty-two paths of wisdom, of which this is the thirtieth. It is called the “Intelligence of the Active” (Sekhel ha-Po'el), because through it the abstract patterns of Hod are made active and formative in Yesod. Later commentators, including Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria, emphasized the path’s role in the process of zivug (coupling) between the sephiroth, where Hod’s analytical clarity fertilizes Yesod’s receptive vessel. In the Hermetic Qabalah of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777, this path is further linked to the tarot trump Adjustment (Justice), reinforcing the theme of equilibrium. The scales of Libra are not static; they represent the constant dynamic adjustment needed to maintain harmony between mind and instinct.

In the table of 777, this path appears under the column “The Tree of Life” at scale step 30, listed simply as “Pathjoins 8–9.” Its numeric designation and the two sephiroth it unites are given without further elaboration, but the correspondence underscores the path’s role as a harmonizing link between the fifth and sixth planes, left and middle pillars, respectively.
