The Tree of Life · Path 12

Pathjoins 1–3

Pathjoins 1–3 designates the thirty-second path of the Tree of Life (the final path in the traditional count), which connects the first Sephirah (Keter) directly to the third Sephirah (Binah). This diagonal link crosses the Abyss from the crown of emanation to the great sea of understanding, a movement that bypasses Chokmah, the second Sephirah, and thus forms a secret channel of raw force into structured form.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 32 runs from the Middle Pillar at its highest point (Keter) to the left pillar at the level of the second plane (Binah). This placement gives it a character of descending, formative energy that moves from pure unity into the first vessel of limitation and receptivity.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the schema of Liber 777, this path is attributed to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet and their associated astrological or element signs. The specific correspondence for Path 32—which is the path of the letter Tau—falls under the element of Saturn, the planetary sphere associated with restriction, structure, and the gateway to the material world (Malkuth).

Historical context

The attribution of Path 32 to the letter Tau (meaning "cross" or "sign") and to Saturn appears in the Western esoteric tradition as codified by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In the Zoharic Kabbalah, this path is described as the "Intelligence of the Administration of the Work," a formulation that echoes its function as the final connecting channel before the energies reach the kingdom of Malkuth. The 777 table entry records the path simply as Pathjoins 1–3, emphasizing its geometric role on the tree diagram rather than its doctrinal name. Early Kabbalists did not systematically number the paths; the 32-path system with numbered connections became standard in the Hebrew-letter attributions of the Renaissance, later refined in the 32 Paths of Wisdom text. In Thelema, this path is ritually associated with the crossing of the Abyss from a different angle than the better-known Path 27 (Peh, connecting Hod to Netzach), but its direct connection from Keter to Binah gives it a particular dignity as the descent of supernal will into the first veil of limitation. The placement of the Tau path at the bottom of the tree in the diagram is mirrored by its receipt of the planetary influence of Saturn, the outermost visible planet, a fitting symbol for the boundary between the divine and the manifest.

In the table of 777

In the row for Pathjoins 1–3 (the Tree of Life column at scale step 12, which is Path 12 in the 32-path count), the named subject is simply the connection itself—neither a Sephirah nor a letter directly, but the numerical pair indicating which two Sephiroth are joined. The sibling cells in that row (the column values for 0 through 32 bis) are themselves blank or minimally defined in the printed book, as 777 uses the path number as the key and fills other columns with the appropriate symbol or name; the entry for Pathjoins 1–3 thus stands as a coordinate reference, not a qualitative attribute, marking the structural link that gives the tree its lateral dimension.
