Pathjoins 2–4
Pathjoins 2–4 is the Qabalistic designation for the sixteenth path of the Tree of Life, the direct connecting channel between the second sephirah, Chokmah (Wisdom), and the fourth sephirah, Chesed (Mercy). In the Hebrew alphabet, this path is assigned to the letter Vau, which literally means "nail" or "hook." Its numerical value is 6. Symbolically, Vau signifies a linking, fastening, or binding force—a principle of connection and stabilization that is essential for the manifestation of form.
Position on the Tree of Life
Path 16 is the direct vertical link on the Pillar of Mercy (the right pillar) connecting Chokmah to Chesed. Chokmah is the primal, undifferentiated dynamic force of the universe; pure, unlimited wisdom. Chesed is the expansive, loving force of mercy and form-building. This path represents the necessary channel through which the raw, chaotic energy of Wisdom is first fixed and shaped into the structured, beneficent energy of Mercy. It is the step where pure potential begins to assume specific character and limitation—a vital contraction without which no stable cosmos could emerge.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
In the traditional Qabalistic system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (from which Liber 777 is largely derived), Path 16 is ruled by the zodiacal sign Taurus, the Bull. Taurus is an earth sign, fixed in quality, and ruled by Venus. Its nature is stable, enduring, practical, and sensual. The symbol of the Bull evokes strength, stubborn persistence, fertile materiality, and a deep connection to the physical world. This correspondence explains the path's function: the raw fire of Chokmah is grounded and made stable through the earthy, determined qualities of Taurus, allowing it to become the solid foundation of Mercy. The Venusian rulership tempers this fixity with a harmonious, binding beauty.
Historical Context
The concept of the 32 paths of wisdom, which includes the 10 sephiroth and the 22 connecting paths (linking the sephiroth), originates in the Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), an early Jewish mystical text dated to the late antique period. There, the paths are described as the fundamental structures of creation. The specific assignment of Hebrew letters to the paths, and the astrological attributions, were later codified in the medieval and Renaissance Qabalah, most notably by the 13th-century Spanish rabbi Abraham Abulafia and in the 16th-century writings of Rabbi Isaac Luria (the Ari).
It was the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (founded in 1888) that systematized the correspondences seen in Liber 777. Aleister Crowley, a former member of the Order, compiled Liber 777 (published 1909) as a comprehensive table of these magical and mystical correspondences, drawing directly from the Order’s teachings. The “777” of the title refers to The Book of the Law (Liber AL vel Legis), which is also central to Thelema. In this system, Path 16 (Vau/Taurus) is seen as the “Magus of the Voice” or the “Lord of the Fixed and Enduring Form,” particularly in the context of the 32nd chapter of The Book of the Law (AL II:19), which speaks of the power of the letter Vau. The path is understood as the bridge between the purely spiritual and the first stages of material manifestation, a necessary and holy binding that enables the Work of creation.
In Liber 777, Path 16 (Pathjoins 2–4) appears on the line of the Tree of Life itself. The corresponding table cells list its position as the 16th path, its Hebrew letter as Vau, its astrological attribution as Taurus, and its numerical value as 6. This cell is the structural definition of the path within the complete schema of the 32 paths on the Tree, confirming its role as the linking channel between the second and fourth sephiroth.
