Ghagiel

Ghagiel is the second of the ten Qliphothic orders, the infernal counterpart of the Sephirah Chokmah. Its name is often translated as 'the Hinderers' or 'the Obstructors', deriving from the Hebrew root גג (gag), meaning 'to push' or 'to thrust aside'. In the Qliphothic hierarchy, Ghagiel represents the chaotic and unbalanced aspect of pure wisdom—wisdom turned to cunning, obstruction, and the disruption of divine flow.

Position on the Tree of Life

Ghagiel occupies the second position on the Qliphothic Tree, corresponding directly to Chokmah (Wisdom) on the Sephirotic Tree. As the second sphere, it is the first active, outpouring force of the Qliphoth, emerging from the unity of Thaumiel (the Qliphah of Kether). Where Chokmah is the pristine, undifferentiated flash of creative wisdom, Ghagiel is that same energy turned back upon itself—a wisdom that hinders rather than illuminates, that confuses and obstructs the path of return.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

While no direct planetary or zodiacal assignment is given to Ghagiel in the Qliphoth column of Liber 777, its Sephirah counterpart Chokmah is associated with the Zodiac (Mazloth) and the Primum Mobile. By extension, Ghagiel may be understood as the obstructive shell that clings to the sphere of the fixed stars, distorting the archetypal patterns into rigid, fateful constraints. In later Qliphothic systems, Ghagiel is sometimes linked to the element of Air in its most turbulent and confusing aspect.

Historical context

The earliest known mention of Ghagiel appears in medieval Qabalistic texts such as the Zohar, where the 'other side' (Sitra Achra) is described as a series of ten impure emanations mirroring the Sephiroth. The Zohar (e.g., Zohar II: 255b) speaks of 'the shells that cling to the branches of the Tree,' and later commentators identified Ghagiel as the shell of Chokmah. The name itself is constructed from the Hebrew letters Gimel-Gimel-Yod-Aleph-Lamed, a doubling that suggests intensification and opposition.

In the 16th century, the Qliphoth were systematized in works such as the Kabbala Denudata and the writings of Isaac Luria, though Ghagiel is not always listed by that exact spelling. The order appears in the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses and in later grimoire traditions as a hierarchy of obstructive spirits. It was Aleister Crowley who fixed the spelling 'Ghagiel' in Liber 777 (1909), drawing on earlier Qabalistic compilations. In Crowley's schema, Ghagiel is the second Qliphah, ruled by the demonic king Beelzebub (according to some lists) and associated with the 'Hinderers'—spirits that block spiritual progress and create confusion in the mind.

In the 20th century, Kenneth Grant and other Typhonian occultists expanded on Ghagiel's role, linking it to the 'Void' aspect of Chokmah and to the concept of the 'Black Wisdom' that precedes manifestation. However, the core traditional meaning remains: Ghagiel is the force of wisdom perverted into obstruction, the intellect turned to sophistry and deceit.

In Liber 777

In the table of Liber 777, Ghagiel appears in the column 'Orders of Qliphoth' at the step of Chokmah (scale step 2). It is flanked by Thaumiel (Kether) above and Satariel (Binah) below, completing the first triad of the Qliphothic Tree. No other correspondences are given for this cell; the entry stands as the name of the order itself, a concise marker for the second shell.
