Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the number 1 is the scale step of Keter, the Crown. Keter is the first Sephirah, located at the top of the Middle Pillar, above Chokmah (2) and Binah (3). It represents the initial impulse of creation, the point of pure being before any differentiation into form or force. As the highest sphere, it is often described as the 'primordial point' or the 'infinite light' (Ain Soph Aur) concentrated into a single, dimensionless center.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the system of Liber 777, the number 1 at the Keter level is associated with the Primum Mobile (the First Mover), the outermost sphere of the Ptolemaic cosmos. This is not a planet in the modern sense but the divine sphere that imparts motion to all others. Its astrological symbol is the point within a circle (☉), representing the sun as the central source of light, though here it transcends planetary influence entirely. The number 1 thus corresponds to the unmanifest principle of will and the root of all astrological forces.

Historical context

The number 1 has been revered as the monad in Pythagorean philosophy, where it is the generator of all numbers and the symbol of the divine intellect. In the Sefer Yetzirah, the earliest known text of Jewish mysticism, the Sephirah Keter is called the 'hidden intellect' (Sekhel ha-Ne'elam), and its number is 1, the first of the ten sefirot. Medieval Kabbalists like Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria elaborated on this, describing Keter as the 'crown' that encircles the divine will, a state so transcendent that it is often considered beyond direct comprehension. In the Hermetic tradition, the number 1 appears in the Emerald Tablet as the 'One Thing' from which all things proceed, and in alchemy, it is the first matter (Prima Materia) that must be reduced to unity before transformation. The Tarot card associated with this scale step is The Fool (0), which paradoxically represents the unnumbered potential of the number 1 before manifestation.

Closing paragraph

In Liber 777, the number 1 appears in the Key Scale column at step 1 (Keter), linking it to the Primum Mobile, the divine name Eheieh (אהיה), and the angelic order of Chaioth ha-Qadesh (Holy Living Creatures). It is the root of all subsequent correspondences, a pure integer that stands as the gate between the infinite and the finite.
