Key Scale · Chokmah

2

2 is the Dyad, the first true number. It is the principle of division, reflection, and distinction—the point that has become a line, the unity that has become aware of itself as other. In the Pythagorean tradition, the Monad is the One, but the Dyad is the first departure from unity, the audacity of the many. It is associated with duality, polarity, and the archetypal masculine force of Wisdom, Chokmah, on the Tree of Life.

Position on the Tree of Life

The number 2 corresponds to the Sephirah Chokmah, the second station on the Tree of Life. Positioned at the top of the Pillar of Mercy, Chokmah is the first emanation from Keter, the Will of the Infinite. The number 2 marks this transition from the absolute, undifferentiated unity of the Crown to the first articulated force of Wisdom. Chokmah is the Father, the primordial point that expands into the line of creation, and is often described as the "Supernal Father" who pours forth into Binah (3), the Supernal Mother.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Key Scale of Liber 777, the number 2 is not directly assigned a planet, but its Sephirah, Chokmah, is attributed to the zodiacal sign of the Zodiac itself (the Primum Mobile) and the fixed stars. The number 2, as the principle of extension, relates to the sphere of the fixed stars, the outermost boundary of the cosmos in the Ptolemaic system. Its quality is that of pure, unmanifested motion and orbit—the circle of the heavens that gives form to all planetary activity.

Historical context

The number 2 has been revered and feared across traditions. In Pythagorean thought, it was considered the first number (the Monad being a principle, not a number), and it represented the ultimate duality: male and female, light and darkness, limit and the unlimited. The Dyad was often associated with the goddess Rhea or Matter, as the receptive principle that receives the form from the Monad. However, in the Hebrew Kabbalah, the number 2 is unequivocally masculine—Chokmah, the Father, the driving force of creation. The Sefer Yetzirah describes the second path (Sephirah) as the "Intelligence of Illuminating Light," the crown of creation, the brightness of unity without equality. This dual nature—the dyad as both the first departure from unity and the source of all pairs—permeates Hermetic thought. The number 2 is the root of all opposition and the necessary condition for any resolution. It is the key to the formula of Love and the primal division that precedes the return to unity.

In the table of Liber 777, at the second step of the Key Scale, the number 2 appears as a fixed and foundational value. It is not a path or a secondary emanation: it is the second Sephirah itself, the explosive force of Wisdom that initiates all subsequent unfolding. The number 2 here is a direct key: it bridges the absolute zero of Keter and the structured forms of the lower Sephiroth, and in any ritual or meditation, it points to the raw, undifferentiated power of the Father.
