Key Scale · Hod

8

The number 8 in the Key Scale is not merely a numeral but the glyph of the Sephirah Hod, the eighth sphere on the Tree of Life. Its Hebrew name (הוד) translates to “Splendor” or “Majesty,” yet this splendor is of the intellect—the glory of clear form and rigorous order. In the Sepher Yetzirah, Hod is associated with the eighth path, and its number encapsulates the perfection of structured thought, the cube of space, and the octave in music.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the Key Scale step 8 places Hod at the base of the pillar of severity, directly opposite Netzach (7). It is the sphere of Mercury, the swift god of communication, and acts as the receiver and analyzer of force from above—distilling raw energy into rational categories. In the pathworking of the Middle Pillar, Hod grounds intellectual energy at the hip level, balancing the emotional force of Netzach.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

The number 8 corresponds to the planet Mercury (Kokab in Hebrew). In astrology, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo; its nature is dual, swift, and analytic. The 8 thus carries the Mercurial qualities of wit, writing, measurement, and magic—especially the mathematical and linguistic arts essential to ceremonial practice.

Historical Context

The attribution of 8 to Hod originates in the earliest strata of Western esotericism. The Sepher Yetzirah assigns the eighth path to the divine name YHWH Tzabaoth and the intelligence “Absolute or Perfect.” Later, in the Zohar, Hod is depicted as the force that receives prophetic dreams and governs the left leg in the divine anatomy. The 8 appears in the Lesser Banishing Ritual as the number of TETRAGRAMMATON when counted in the four directions (2+2+2+2). In Liber 777, Crowley anchors 8 to the Key Scale itself, making it the template for all correspondences at the Hod level—ever the mediator between the abstract sephiroth above and the material forms of the world.

In the table, the number 8 serves as the index for Hod, linking every entry in the row—from the name of God (Elohim Tzabaoth) to the plant (the Moly of Hermes) and the Magical Formula (the Oath). It is the key that unlocks the harmony of the eighth sphere.
