17

Seventeen is a prime integer, the seventh prime. Its value appears on the Key Scale as the 17th step, corresponding to the 17th Path of the Tarot and the Hebrew letter Zain (ז), the Sword. In Gematria, 17 equals the Hebrew word Tov (טוב), meaning “good” — a resonance central to its symbolic weight.

Position on the Tree of Life

The number 17 identifies the 17th path of the Tree of Life, one of the thirty-two paths of wisdom. This path connects Binah (Understanding) with Tiphereth (Beauty), linking the highest receptive power of the Supernal Triad to the central harmonizing sephirah. It is the Path of the Sword, cutting illusion and revealing truth.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Path 17 is attributed to the zodiac sign Gemini (twin nature of the sign). This astrological link flows directly from Zain as the Sword of the Magician, which divides and analyzes. The number 17 itself is a union of 10 (Malkuth, the Kingdom) and 7 (Netzach, Victory), suggesting a perfected manifestation of victory in the material world. In Paschal tables, 17 is the day of the full moon closest to the vernal equinox, further linking it to the Gemini dualism of light and darkness.

Historical Context

The number 17 carries a long and contested history in esoteric tradition. In Pythagorean thought, 17 is the number of Sefirot (10) plus the 7 planets — a numerical harmony. The Zohar weaves 17 into the fabric of creation: the word Tov (good) appears in the first chapter of Genesis 17 times before the Flood narrative, and the flood itself began on the 17th of the second month. This pattern aligns with alchemical manuscripts of the Middle Ages, where 17 was a cipher for the conjunction of opposites — the combining of sulfur and mercury — and thus for the Philosopher’s Stone.

During the Hermetic revival of the Renaissance, 17 became central to Cabalistic gematria. The phrase Tov Libo (“good heart”) equals 17, and the number was seen as a key to the 17th path of the Sepher Yetzirah, which describes a path of analysis, division, and the sword of the magician. In the Hieroglyphic Monad of John Dee, 17 elements compose the monadic glyph, a fact Dee used to link the number to the “perfect” number 3 through the formula 17 = 1 + 6 + 10, a triad of Unity, Life, and Completion. The 17th century grimoire The Key of Solomon lists 17 as the number of the second pentacle of the moon, used for travel and revelation.

In the Table

In Crowley’s Liber 777, the number 17 appears in the Key Scale column at row 15, step 17. It marks the Path of Zain, the Sword of the Magician, the numbers of Tov and the conjunction of opposites, and the astrological attribution to Gemini. The table aligns this numeric value with the deeper structure of the 32 paths, making 17 a fixed point in the system of correspondences.
