21

The number twenty-one (21) on the Key Scale of Liber 777 is an integer that encodes the Thirtieth Path of the Tree of Life, counting from the first Path (11) through the thirty-second (32). In Hebrew gematria, 21 corresponds to the letter Shin (ש), whose value is 300, but as a Key Scale step the integer stands for the ordinal position of a Path rather than a numerical value; it is the coordinate between the sephiroth Netzach and Malkuth on the diagram, formed by the letter Shin in the standard Qabalistic arrangement.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree, Path 21 runs horizontally between Netzach (Victory, Sephirah 7) and Malkuth (Kingdom, Sephirah 10). It is the lowest horizontal Path, linking the astral realm of Netzach to the physical world of Malkuth, and is attributed to the element of Fire in some systems. The Key Scale step 21 marks this connection as the numeric pointer in the table: the row for Path 21 is indexed by the integer 21.

Historical context

The number 21 appears in Qabalah primarily through the thirty-two Paths of Wisdom. The Sefer Yetzirah lists 32 Paths—22 letters (including 5 finals) and 10 Sephiroth—but medieval and later sources standardised the count as 10 Sephiroth and 22 Paths, numbered from 11 to 32. Thus 21 is the eleventh Path in that sequence. The Hebrew letter Shin is assigned to this Path in the Hermetic Qabalah, and in the Golden Dawn system the Tarot trump Atu XXI (The Universe) corresponds to this Path, linking the number 21 to the final major arcana card, which signifies completion and the synthesis of elements. In Crowley’s The Book of Thoth, Atu XXI is titled The Universe and is associated with Saturn, though the Key Scale number 21 keeps a Fire attribution on its own numeric level. The integer 21 itself also appears in gematria as the value of the word “Ehyeh” (אהיה, I Am) when the he is taken as 10 instead of 5, but this is less relevant to the Key Scale than the Path number.

In the manuscript tradition of Liber 777, the Key Scale is a numeric ruler used to index all other columns. The number 21 appears in the first column as a simple integer, and all other cells on that row derive their correspondence from the specific Path. Historically, the use of pure integers as a scale allowed cross‑referencing between diverse systems (tarot, planets, gods, and plants) without imposing a single symbolic language.

In the Liber 777 Key Scale table, 21 appears as the numeric label for the row that lists correspondences of Path 21. It is one of twenty-two integers from 11 to 32, and is preceded by 20 and followed by 22. The page’s entry for the number 21 therefore functions as a pointer to the Path of Shin, Fire, and the Universe tarot trump.
