3

Three is the number of synthesis, the third Sephirah Binah on the Tree of Life. In the Key Scale of Liber 777, the number 3 marks the point where the first triad of the Sephiroth is completed—the passive, receptive principle that receives the flow from Kether (1) and Chokmah (2) and gives it form. Etymologically, the word 'three' derives from Proto-Germanic *þrīz, cognate with Latin trēs and Greek treis, all pointing to an ancient Indo-European root for triplicity. In Qabalistic numerology, 3 is the number of the Great Mother, the supernal abyss of understanding, and the first number to embody the concept of limitation and structure.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the number 3 corresponds to Binah, the third Sephirah. It sits at the top of the pillar of severity (the left pillar), directly below Kether and opposite Chokmah. As the first Sephirah to be numbered with a digit that is not unity, 3 represents the first true differentiation into a distinct vessel. The path from Chokmah (2) to Binah (3) is the second path of the Tree, and the number 3 itself is the gateway to the seven lower Sephiroth that follow.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Key Scale, the number 3 is assigned to the sphere of Saturn. This is not a casual association: Saturn, the slowest and most distant of the classical planets, symbolizes the contraction, limitation, and time-bound nature that Binah imposes on the formless energy of Chokmah. The number 3 thus carries the weight of fate, structure, and the dark, fertile womb of creation.

Historical context

The number three has been a symbol of completeness and divine order across cultures long before it entered Qabalistic literature. In Pythagorean thought, three was the first true number because it has a beginning, middle, and end. The triad appears in the Hindu Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), the Christian Trinity, and the three worlds of the Kabbalah (Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah, Assiah—though four worlds, the first three are the supernal triad). In the Sefer Yetzirah, the number three is the foundation of the three mother letters (aleph, mem, shin) and the three elements (air, water, fire). The Zohar expands on this, describing the three heads of the divine crown. In the Western esoteric tradition, the number 3 is the number of manifestation: the triangle, the first polygon, and the symbol of the triune nature of reality. Crowley, in 777, places 3 at the head of the column of the Key Scale, linking it directly to the Sephirah that is the source of all form and limitation.

In Liber 777

In the Key Scale column of Liber 777, the number 3 appears as the third entry, directly following 2 (Chokmah) and preceding 4 (Chesed). It is the numerical anchor for Binah, and all other correspondences in the same row—such as the divine name YHVH Elohim, the angelic order Aralim, the planet Saturn, and the color black—are tied to this number. The number 3 itself, as a pure integer in the Key Scale, serves as the index for the entire complex of Binah correspondences, a single digit that unlocks the third Sephirah’s full symbolic network.
