30
30 is the Qabalistic number of the 30th Path of the Tree of Life, which corresponds to the Hebrew letter Resh (ר) and the planet Sol (the Sun). In Hebrew, Resh literally means “head” or “beginning” and symbolises the sovereign, radiating principle of conscious light. The number 30 thus stands at the centre of the solar current within the Western esoteric tradition.
Position on the Tree of Life
On the Tree of Life, the 30th Path links the sephiroth Hod (Eighth, “Splendour”) and Netzach (Seventh, “Victory”). Hod is the sphere of the intellect and analytical reason; Netzach is the sphere of emotion, instinct and natural energy. Path 30 therefore functions as a dynamic synthesising current — a solar bridge that purifies and integrates raw feeling with disciplined mind, transmuting both into illuminated will.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
The attribution of Sol to Path 30 is fixed. In astrology, the Sun represents the core ego, vitality, royalty, and the principle of conscious individuality. Its nature is golden, masculine, and life-giving. On the Tree, Sol works here as the light of awareness that reconciles the apparent war between heart and head, lending the path its epithet of “Solar Consciousness.” The sephirothic destination (Netzach) receives this solar ray and tempers Hod’s barren logic with warmth, while the inferior mental sphere (Hod) lends precision to Netzach’s unbounded passion.
Historical context
The 30th Path has a rich history in the Jewish esoteric tradition of the Sepher Yetzirah (Book of Formation), which attributes to Resh the sense of speech or the power of articulation. In the Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom commentary, Path 30 is called the “Collecting Intelligence” because it gathers the scattered lights of the lower sephiroth into a focused solar beam. Within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the 30th Path was elaborated as “The Path of the Sun” and formed the foundation of many rituals of solar adoration and spiritual alchemy. The 777 table by Aleister Crowley systematised this path among the Key Scale, assigning it the number 30 from 1 (Kether) to 32 (Malkuth) and explicitly matching it with the Tarot Trump The Sun (Atu XIX). The 30th Path thereby became a fixed point of reference for the solar grade of Adeptus Minor.
In the 777 table, the number 30 appears in the Key Scale column precisely as the enumeration of the 30th Path. Its immediate context confirms the association with Resh, Sol, and the synthesising bridge between Hod and Netzach, making it a key numeric locus for all solar correspondences — from the Phoenix and the lion to gold, heliotrope, and the god forms Ra and Apollo.
