15

15 is the numerical designation of the fifteenth path on the Tree of Life, corresponding to the Hebrew letter Vau (value 6) and the astrological sign Taurus. In the Qabalistic Key Scale, it stands as a distinct step between the sephiroth, marking a specific route of spiritual descent and ascent.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 15 runs from Chokmah (Wisdom, the second sephirah) to Tiphereth (Beauty, the sixth sephirah). It is one of the three vertical paths on the central pillar that link the supernal triad to the heart of the Tree. As a path, it carries the energy of Vau, the ‘nail’ that binds together the letters of the Tetragrammaton, symbolizing connection, stability, and the formative power of the Son.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

15 is assigned to Taurus, the fixed earth sign ruled by Venus. This correspondence infuses the path with themes of endurance, sensuality, material manifestation, and the slow, patient growth of nature. The Venusian influence tempers the earthy fixity with a love of harmony and beauty, reflecting the path’s role in integrating wisdom into a balanced, embodied form.

Historical context

The number 15 appears in the Sepher Yetzirah as the value of the letter Vau, which is one of the twelve simple letters (those without a double pronunciation). In that text, Vau is associated with the sense of touch and the sign Taurus. Later Qabalistic works, including the Zohar, elaborate on the path’s function as a channel for the descent of the divine will into the heart. In the Hermetic tradition, Path 15 corresponds to the Tarot card Atu IX: The Hermit, a figure of solitary seeking and inner light. The number 15 itself reduces to 6 (1+5), linking it to Tiphereth, the sephirah of beauty and sacrifice, and to the Sun in its harmonious aspect. This reduction also connects 15 to the hexagram, the seal of the microcosm, and to the six directions of space. In medieval Jewish mysticism, the number 15 was sometimes avoided in writing the divine name (YH) because it could be confused with the Tetragrammaton, leading to the use of 16 instead—a testament to its perceived power.

In Liber 777, the number 15 appears as the Key Scale value for Path 15, anchoring the correspondences of Vau, Taurus, the Hermit, and the sense of touch within a single, precise coordinate on the Tree of Life.
