24

Twenty-four is the numerical value assigned to the 14th Path of the Tree of Life in the Key Scale of Liber 777. In the Hebrew alphabet, this Path is governed by the letter Nun (נ), whose name means “fish” and whose numeric value is 50—yet the Path itself is indexed as 24 in the Key Scale, a separate numbering system that maps the thirty-two paths of wisdom. The number 24 thus stands as a pure index of position, but its symbolic weight derives from the correspondences of the Path it denotes: the zodiac sign Scorpio, the element of Water in its most intense and hidden aspect, and the alchemical process of putrefaction and regeneration.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 24 connects the fifth Sephirah, Geburah (Severity), to the seventh Sephirah, Netzach (Victory). This diagonal link runs across the left pillar of severity and the right pillar of mercy, channeling the harsh, limiting force of Geburah into the expansive, emotional drive of Netzach. The number 24 therefore marks a transformative passage—a corridor of trial and dissolution that leads to enduring passion and artistic expression.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Scorpio, the fixed water sign ruled by Mars (and traditionally by Pluto in modern astrology), is the astrological key of Path 24. The number 24 thus carries the Scorpionic themes of death and rebirth, sexual mystery, occult power, and the probing of hidden truths. In the Key Scale, 24 is not a planet or a Sephirah but a Path number; its planetary resonance is mediated through Scorpio’s rulers, lending it a martial, penetrating quality.

Historical context

The number 24 appears in Qabalistic literature primarily as the Path index in the thirty-two paths of the Sepher Yetzirah. The earliest known list of the thirty-two paths (in the short version of the Sepher Yetzirah) does not number them sequentially; the numbering system used in Liber 777 derives from later medieval and Renaissance Qabalah, particularly the scheme found in the Porta Lucis and the works of Johann Reuchlin. In that tradition, Path 24 is the fourteenth of the twenty-two paths (the “letters” paths) and is associated with the Hebrew letter Nun. The number 24 itself also appears in broader esoteric symbolism: the twenty-four elders of the Apocalypse, the twenty-four hours of the day, and the twenty-four letters of the Greek alphabet (including digamma). However, within the specific context of the Key Scale, 24 is a fixed coordinate—a cell in the table that aligns the Path with its Hebrew letter, zodiac sign, Tarot trump (Death), and other correspondences. Crowley’s Liber 777 systematizes these associations, making the number 24 a shorthand for the entire complex of Scorpio, Nun, and the fourteenth Path.

In the table of Liber 777 at Key Scale step 24, the number serves as the row header for all correspondences of the 14th Path: the Hebrew letter Nun, the zodiac sign Scorpio, the Tarot card Death (Atu XIII), the magical image of a scorpion or serpent, and the god-names associated with that Path. The number 24 is thus a key—a simple integer that unlocks a dense network of symbolic relationships, each pointing to the same transformative current.
