Key Scale · Tiphereth

6

The number 6 is the integer of harmony, balance, and centralization. In the Qabalistic Key Scale, it is the numerical value assigned to the sephirah Tiphereth, a word meaning "Beauty" in Hebrew. This is not a superficial aesthetic, but the profound beauty of a perfectly integrated system, the radiant splendor of truth and sacrifice made manifest.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, 6 (Tiphereth) occupies the central position on the Middle Pillar. It is the sixth sphere, receiving the influences of the supernal triad (1, 2, 3) and the fourth and fifth spheres (Chesed and Geburah) and harmonizing them before passing them down to the lower sephiroth (7, 8, 9, 10). It is the heart of the Microprosopus, the Son, and the point of equilibrium where the opposing forces of Mercy and Severity are reconciled.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The primary planetary correspondence for the number 6 is the Sun. This is not the physical star alone, but the solar principle: the source of life, light, and consciousness. The Sun is the king, the central heart of the solar system, radiating energy and authority. This aligns perfectly with Tiphereth's role as the central, harmonizing force on the Tree, the place of the Higher Self, the Ruach, and the consciousness of the divine child.

Historical context

The number 6 has held a place of significance in mystical traditions long before its formalization in the Qabalah. In Pythagorean thought, 6 was the first perfect number (1+2+3), symbolizing the creation of the world (the Hexaemeron) and the marriage of the male (3) and female (2) principles. In the Hebrew tradition, the number 6 is associated with the letter Vav, a nail or hook, which serves as a connector. This is deeply symbolic of Tiphereth's function as the great connector between the upper and lower worlds. The six days of creation, the six directions of space (north, south, east, west, up, down) and the six-pointed Star of David (the Seal of Solomon) all echo this theme of centralization and harmony. In the Hermetic Qabalah of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, the number 6 is the fixed point around which the entire system of correspondences revolves. It is the sphere of the Son, the Redeemer, and the sacrificed god—a theme found in the myths of Osiris, Adonis, and Christ. The number 6 is the point of self-awareness and the beginning of the path of return, where the aspirant, having balanced the forces of the personality, can truly begin to know the Self.

In the table of Liber 777, the number 6 (Tiphereth) is the central axis of the Key Scale. It is the point of reference for all other numbers, representing the perfect balance and radiant beauty of the divine harmony made manifest in the microcosm. Its correspondences are the heart of the system, the point from which all other paths and sephiroth are understood.
