4
The number 4 is the first of the solid, manifest numbers after the initial triad, a square bounding the irrational and the ideal. Its name in Hebrew is Daleth (door), and its associative value in the Key Scale of 777 is 4, which places it at the centre of Chesed, the Sphere of Mercy.
Position on the Tree of Life
On the Tree of Life this number occupies the fourth position, the Sephirah Chesed. This is the first sphere of the Pillar of Mercy, the gateway between the supernal triad of Keter (1), Chokmah (2), and Binah (3) and the structured world of the six Sephiroth below. As a number, 4 is always the first square in arithmetic, the first figure that can enclose an area: it is the measure of Saturn's outer boundary, the stable foundation of a house (both in geometry and in Kabbalistic architecture).
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the Key Scale, 4 corresponds to the number of the planet Jupiter—whose astrological glyph is a crescent surmounting a cross—and to the element of Water in its most settled and formative aspect. The astrological number of Jupiter is 4 when reduced from the letter Yod (value 10), but here the 4 acts as the key to the scale itself: it is the measure of Tzedek (Righteousness), the expansive, merciful, and kingly power.
Historical context
The number 4 appears repeatedly in the major esoteric systems that underpin the 777 table. In Pythagorean number theory, the tetraktys (1+2+3+4 = 10) is the source of the cosmos, and the number 4 itself represents the four elements, the four fixed signs of the zodiac, and the four directions of the compass. In the Sefer Yetzirah, the number 4 is the number of the letter Daleth, which is the door of the universe, the gateway through which the emanations of the upper triad pass into the lower worlds. In alchemy, the four stages of the Work (nigredo, albedo, citrinitas, rubedo) are numbered 4, each stage a square of transformation. The 777 table inherits this entire weight: 4 is not merely a count but a seal, the number that holds the pattern of the Sephirah of Chesed.
In the table of 777, 4 appears as the Key Scale number for the Sephirah Chesed, anchoring all correspondences for that sphere: its God-name (El), its archangel (Tzadkiel), its colour (deep blue-violet), and its magical weapon (the sceptre). The number itself is the cipher of the door that opens between the supernal world and the world of the Sephiroth, the first square of manifestation.
